I went ahead and made a poll, to see if any more Americans are willing to state their opinions on that. Americans do vote, time after time, and nothing changes. Both parties are full on greedy politicians that promise changes and then once in office never change anything. We are not likely to be overthrowing our government anytime soon so we just go about life. There is a pretty bad recession in most of the world right now and USA is not excluded from that.
Our schools have changed since I was in to school, to when my daughter went. She had no clue who JFK was or why he was shot. The teacher grazed over certain sections and instead pushed more into areas that she felt personally more akin too. I taught my daughter who JFK was and quite a few other subjects the school left out. I talked to you about my opinions on teachers on USA education before, I did yell loud and clear but in the end, I was a gnat.
I really don't think that most countries these days are really going to change that much anymore unless it is something that their elite want. I will also say that just because you are not highly devout does not believe you still do not believe in God and your basic principles such as the ten commandments. God might not be too happy about it, but that is between that and their maker and not for me to judge. That can be as devout or non devout and I still can't question their right to any religious beliefs.
I brought up the original subject because ever since a young girl I used found the use of different vernacular styles to be complex and amazing. The world would be a boring place if we were all the same. I don't issue with "wee" or any other cultural differences. I just find them unique to what I am accustomed to. I have spent the better part of the last three years out of USA half the time, in NL, Dublin, Croatia, London, and Belfast. I have walked around in Belgium and Germany during my travels in between places as well. Several years ago I was able to go to Italy and France. I have also spent time in three different cities in Mexico, Aruba, and Jamaica. I have also seen about 10 USA states. I love to hear the different accents and languages and learn about the different cultures, when I bring back my stories my friends and family are green with envy.
I will say this, I am one of those people that prefers talking to the locals than the other tourists so perhaps I am a wee bit strange myself. I am the term strange in this context to mean different and unsettling to others or odd.

Exactly - just because you're strange in that regard, doesn't mean that its negative in connotation. I am inherently curious myself, so I take effort to learn things about the world. And some of the things I learn are quite disheartening.
As for the likely nature of someone overthrowing their government in this day and age. Its still happening. Once people are pushed far enough and the situation becomes unacceptable people WILL strike out. Its only a matter of time before their fear of repercussions gets overwhelmed by the feeling of being abused. The threat of jetfighters, missiles, assault rifles and tanks just is a much better repellant than swords and muskets were in times past. (Theres that fear again... Interesting how it always keeps popping up when it comes to how people choose to behave no?)
And your daughter not being told who JFK is in school - considering thats even part of OUR education, I'd say thats pretty bad... Which makes me wonder why so many are taking such neglect in stride. Though thats a vastly different topic.

Though thats a vastly different topic. Yes, but that was a negative comment about myself. Self deprecating if you will. We don't take it in stride, there is just nothing that can be done. I had it out with the teacher, the school board and I hit brick wall after brick wall. Unless I was ready to sue the school at my own expense there was nothing that could be done. Money talks and bullshit walks. I hate it but I feel I have little to no merit as an American to anything that happens in America. Voting is futile anymore. Right and Left, they all make promises on their "sides" and then squat happens. I have no faith in my politicians whatsoever at all. Each one I voted in has done nothing, each one I voted against has done nothing. Unless I hit a lottery and win a boat load of money, I don't matter. Will the citizens stand up someday and have a revolution against our government? I doubt it, the last civil war we had is still a stain on our memories. I think most just stick their head down and suck it up and deal. Lawyers are quite expensive and there are laws to protect the lawmakers and government agencies from any suits until you go to the highest courts in our country. What is the average person to do? I called my State representative one time about a local problem and got a very polite concerned brush off. I have heard tales from some in other countries that feel the same about their own country, this is something that is also not just a USA problem. The politicians have become too powerful. The politicians help to make the laws that protect the politicians. I have to say the whole thing in this economy just makes you feel beaten down. Which is also kinda how I feel about Godus now, beaten down. Yell and scream and debate and suggest and everything else for over a year, and what does it get you? Nothing, just beaten down. Who's the bully now PM?

Its not a negative comment though - its an observation. An observation that you apparently perceive as negative. Apparently you feel that because you are interested in things that different from what you're used to - and that interest is different from what is expected of you. You somehow do something wrong. Making the perception of something different being negative, not the difference itself being negative.
Please tell me - how is you being curious about the habits and cultures different from your own a BAD thing?
As for what you can do about changing things? Get your shit together. Yes, its a long and hard road. But guess what, if all of us had dropped Godus from the start and just took things in stride. Godus would've been far worse off than it is today. It'd probably have a cash-shop on PC if nobody had objected to it so loudly. Yet with Godus, the repercussions to your actions for going against the curve aren't that negative. There isn't a big repellant stopping you from doing so. Other than perhaps the feeling of futility.
Schools are different - if ALL parents that felt like you do decided to take their kids to better institutions, or create their own institution if such a one didn't exist. Things WOULD change. Yet nobody does this... Why? There most certainly are people capable of doing it. Hell there are TEACHERS that feel the same way that would be more than willing to cooperate in such an endeavour. So why does nobody bother?
Because people fear the consequences of their actions. "If I don't send my kid to THIS school, (s)he's not going to get any education at all. And without education they won't stand a chance in society." Better something than nothing right? Lets just make the best of what we have available. (Thats the very definition of taking things in stride, you're accepting it as normal.) The same goes for going against your government - you don't do it because you're afraid of the repercussions.
You excuse this because OTHER countries don't do anything about it either? Or that the countries that do something about it end up in bloody conflict? Now correct me if I'm wrong, but as bad as a civil war is. Millions of people being abused by their own government and forced into debt and poverty is just a slow stranglehold to death. But I guess thats easier than the alternative right?
Which only put merit to my statement - the US (and many other countries like it) are being controlled through FEAR. Fear of the unknown, fear of things different, fear of change, fear of violence, fear of... The list just goes on and on and on. And because FEAR is a negative, it taints everything it becomes associated with.
However thats a far larger issue - and one that I don't see people dealing with as long as they are too busy taking offense over little things. If we can't even get a small group of people to agree on a simple issue, how the hell do you expect a large group of people to agree on something like the government of a nation.

I'm still telling you I did mean it in a self depracating way. I don't believe it is but, it was meant to be more sarcasm. We have people that attack our own government, they kill innocent civilians, they are terrorists and no normal American wants any parts of them. I don't know if you have heard of the Oklahoma City Bombing but that is what that was. Babies died in that. I guess they did not think about the Day Care Center that was in the building. I do know, THAT is not a way to fix things. I would say it will never change till the government falls from it's own demise. I want no parts of an internal war. Are you happy with yours? Are you happy with the EU? If not, would like start attacking your own government? Where do you draw the line? I have heard of ton of things people are not happy with in NL but I highly doubt they are planning a coup. I heard these things while spending month after month after month there for the last three years from those that are native to NL. It is not my place to say. As to America in general to come for the future year or so, I am not going to be around there much, so I leave that all to the capable hands of the rest of the Americans floating around cyber space that might read this. My reason for leaving really has nothing to do with any of that, it is for purely personal reasons. I will still stay in touch with my ties to USA, family and whatnot, and I will still file my taxes and maintain my citizenship but the rest will be out of my hands. I looked up the papers again today, we are on track and in line to be able to follow all the countries requirements to settle for good in a few months. The only main problem we have right now is to find a wee place somewhere to lie our heads and call home. Fingers crossed.

No, I'm not happy with my government either and neither are many other dutch people. So I do try to inform those who aren't aware of what is going on around them and get people to take steps whereever they can. Aswell as taking steps whereever I can myself. I never said it was easy - nor did I say a full-on assault was the way to go.
But that doesn't mean you should just take it all in stride and accept it. Having the means or influence, I would do more. So far I'm limited in what I can achieve however. So I work within the area I actually CAN affect. Which means that for example regarding education, I ended up having numerous discussions with my teachers on how things went. As did my parents whenever they felt the establishment did something the wrong way. Did it do anything? I can't say, but atleast I didn't just took it. And for that point in time, the teachers and schools adjusted their methods.
Anywho, lets put it down to this. For me, the words aren't inherently negative in nature. Because I try to take things based on the information available to me. I dislike relying on prejudice - as such I actively try to work off of information made available to me. Sometimes this information is incorrect and I draw a wrong conclusion, but on the whole it has served me well.
As such, things that are strange or different are not inherently negative to me either. I draw their allignment from the context. What further information do you provide (or do I have available to me) regarding the object or person being described as strange. What does this context reveal to me and what can I observe for myself.
Personally I applaud you for being curious about other cultures and habits - its a very good habit to be curious about the world. So even if you intended it as self-deprication, I do not perceive it as such within the context given. Because I view curiosity and wanting to learn as a positive thing.
Neither do I perceive sarcasm as inherently negative - I grew up with massive overdoses of sarcasm from my parents and family. Its not used necessarily in a negative sense. So I don't perceive it as such. (I'm open to the usage in both ways.)

It's all good Danjal. I think that sarcasm is fun at times. It can also be used in a sneering way. The English language, is such an interesting creature that depending upon which culture uses it the whole word or phrase can have all different meanings.
It is funny the place we are staying at is a place owned by some Spaniards that have a house where they have adult English students to come at stay with them in Belfast. Most of them are Spanish too. They also have another house they rent out a discounted rates for English speaking folk that are open to the idea of speaking to their students in their native tongues, not just one of any country but all of them. Since he is a Dutch English speaker and I am a American English speaker, I figure we just be their cup of tea and I hope to talk him into letting us stay here till we find our new place, you cannot beat his rates! I also love to talk, so that would be a great fit. Wish us luck, we have to go meet him in a bit and see what he and his wife say. I am hoping the have the room available to be flexible for a few weeks or so, so we can take the time to really find a great match.
As far as my interest in other cultures, it has been a blessing. Every country I have been too, I have learned something from. I soak it up like a piece of bread in broth. I miss my old comfortable shoe of USA no matter how battered it is, but for now I am going to enjoy my new hiking boots and ride the adventure of cultural exchange.

Please tell me - how is you being curious about the habits and cultures different from your own a BAD thing? Let me explain that for you in terms of evolution. Evolution is very similar to the behavior of lightning (because both are application of the same world principle): First, there are small amount of pioneers examining every way possible. When one of them finds the route that leads to the cheapest solution (in case of lightning, the way to the ground with the least resistance of the plasma channel made by the small "pioneer" discharges), EVERYONE comes that path (the secondary discharge is always bigger and stronger, and is a biggest discharge possible). That's what the nature forces us, humans to do - to follow already discovered cheapest, the most fit to our living circumstances (circumstances of our ancestors, to be exact, with small changes added on the way). That's why Kalashnikov rifle can shoot no matter how dirty it is - if it can't shoot full of dirt, it can't shoot at all. At least in Russia. That's why Swiss rifles with their mountain-based accuracy and high maintenance are not in demand in our country - in fact, we import very, very few weaponry because our country is very different when it comes to maintenance. We also have social learning mechanisms, which involve not just watch0learning, but also forced teaching to be closer to traditions, no matter how ridiculous they are - they had a reason a long ago, and there's no guarantee the reason disappeared. That's why everyone tries to protect LGBT and hates pedophiles - we're taught to do so. And when anyone appears who thinks different - he's either wrong (he doesn't follow the traditions that protect us) or even worse - he's not one of us. That's what "strange" is. It's different in one of two ways - either challenged or enemy. For strong example, if I bring here an evidence of pedophilia being more normal than homosexuality, your first reaction will be disgust, not curiosity. I have already been called "immoral", "bad person", etc. for exactly the reasons I described above and in thread "forum morality".

There is a big difference between pedophiles over LGBT though. The one are two consenting people who make a choice, a choice that is put in question by a third party because they believe it goes against what they stand for or believe in (because it is different and they don't understand it...), even if it has nothing to do with them. Pedophilia on the other hand is the decision by one person to take advantage of a minor, usually in the extent that the "lesser" party has no knowledge of the consequences nor the capacity to resist.
They are inherently very different in concept. Not just because of what we were told since we were kids, but because the two are inherently very different. No matter what culture you come from. Even if such relations with minors are accepted or condoned. The core principle stands that the adult is taking advantage of someone who is not in the position to resist.
So unless you want to argue that one person taking advantage of another is exactly the same as people choosing to alter the way they themselves live without involving others. The example given is entirely nonsensical. Someone choosing their own sexual orientation or gender representation is a vastly different matter than someone choosing to take advantage of another person.
The perception towards things that are foreign is a cultural one though. Not an inherent one. You are told that foreign/strange are bad, because of a desire to breed fear. If you are afraid of something, you're more willing to fight it rather than accept it. And as such you are more easily manipulated. (Much like a child being abused by an adult.)
Do you have proof that the 'foreign entity' is inherently bad? No you don't... But why take chances right? Better to attack pre-emptively than to be attacked.
Now to extend the matter of pedophilia, I personally am of the opinion that any such behaviour. Where one person or group takes advantage of another because the lesser group is either ignorant or incapable of resisting. It is by its very definition abhorrent. Hence also my general dislike for religion, because most religions is just that, a piece of leverage to control others.
Its also why I'm in FAVOR of curiosity and learning - because learning about things that are strange, makes it so they no longer ARE strange. Or atleast, not in the sense that they are "unknown", but just that they are "different" and not necessarily to be feared. Its the inherent assumption that different has to be bad, which stands at the core of most conflict.
Not all humans follow this path of least resistance, many do take effort to educate themselves and to learn about the world around them. Which is a GOOD thing. If anything, its a bad thing that so many are willing to just sit down and have the world happen around them. Fear always has been and always will be a poor advisor. Decisions made out of fear are rarely if ever rational ones.
All in all, you gave no reason why being curious about the habits and cultures is a bad thing. You gave plenty of reasons why certain people are trained to fear... But you avoided the entire issue at hand.

Pedophilia on the other hand is the decision by one person to take advantage of a minor, usually in the extent that the "lesser" party has no knowledge of the consequences nor the capacity to resist. Which is also the thing you are taught without any evidence of the reason for denying minors their capability of making such choice. Not to mention the consequences are never defined. Then again, I was talking about this as an example and have no interest in protecting a discriminated group I have nothing to do with.

I think I'll abstain from this conversation.
Not that I have any hard feelings about it all, even being a full-blooded American Mutt Yank male, because I know who I am and find the world - and the people in it - to be so fascinatingly diverse and varied. I'm just a curious, well intentioned sort.
