So whatever happened to the wonderful game story that was to be written by James Leach that Kickstarter backers paid at least 10000 GBP for? As it stands now Godus appears to be completely void of story altogether.

As it stands now Godus appears to be completely void of story altogether. I'm guessing it will be added in the last few iterations before the official "100.0135%" release.

The story is emergent, it's all in the gameplay somewhere. Just squint really hard, bring your face close to the monitor until it smacks against it and go, "THERE IT ISN'T!"

I heard a rumour he wrote that original Xx AmY xX thing with the suicidal cat lady and the alcoholic paedophile or whatever it was. I used to hate that thing, but now I feel like it adds an extra dimension to the game and they should bring it back!

So uhm, Fabs - what do you know about how this is going to progress? Is there an internal goal or objective to when Godus is considered "complete".
Both in terms of mechanics and gameplay aswell as anything related to a potential story? How many ages you're going to aim for, how the Astari and other new tribes will tie into that? That kinda stuff?
Even if its not set in stone, any plans or indication would be great. Cause we're getting a bit worried here if Peter has effectively 'lost interest' and wants to devote his time and energy onto his own new project. (I mean, if the studio itself keeps working untill its finished that may actually be an improvement - but usually when the boss moves on that means tying up loose ends and closing shop.)

Maybe he had writer's block. Oh, no wait. I am sure he had one - they showed it in one of the video updates. I think it was the first and last time i saw him.

(I mean, if the studio itself keeps working untill its finished that may actually be an improvement - but usually when the boss moves on that means tying up loose ends and closing shop.) Thus far, we've been working on new features as they are requested. I'm not aware of a road map as such, but that's my awareness, not that there isn't one. If I were producer, I might be able to give you more info in this respect. Now you bring it up, I don't see anything related to story any more. There was stuff, the old battle maps and the storyline with Amy, but that's all I can see around me. If I were to make a bet on it, I'd say that it's more likely that we'll work on gameplay rather than storyline progression stuff as that doesn't really fit with the game now. Do you see Godus as a story based game any more? I see where it's going as more of a sandbox game now. All the community requests I read seem geared towards personal story developed while playing. And in all seriousness, Peter loses interest at the drop of a hat. But then it gets rekindled again. I think the same thing happened when we were balancing the progress and card reveals. He gave the job to Jamie and started thinking up new things to put in Godus, but then about a month later he looked at the timeline and did a complete reinvention of how it worked visually. I'm expecting Peter to be all over his new toy for a while, but then come back to Godus with that terrifying grin that means we've got two weeks to implement a cool new unique and delightful thing that will amaze the world.

WOW Fabs, I really feel for you and the others at 22Cans. I would think Godus would make a great case study of why a road map for design would be needed. I can understand it changing but just basically programing stuff with no idea where or how it might fit in the over all game..... I guess ends up in the feature train wreck that is Godus.
As to story, I think even in a sand box you can do it, you just let the player set the pace. Have it keyed off things the player does not any kind of hard timed events. Also it would have to be more of a general back ground story rather then a in your face story. Such as how your race advances effects the world or other races. Different advancements could change how the other tribes react. But then that is getting more advanced then the game will ever be I think.

Peter has always been one to think of a direction and head that way, but be distracted by things, and ultimately been the better for it. Sometimes it can appear that he's gone off on a wild tangent, and sometimes it takes a lot of effort to not tell him that he's nuts, but in the end he usually produces something great, so I'm just going to keep riding the train until we're told we're at out final stop. Then I'll make my judgement.

That must be a nightmare. I never have understood how you get to the end if you have no idea what the end looks like. It is, in my opinion, exactly why Godus failed to deliver timely and had so many issues along the way. i tend to pop up and then drop out again every few months. I have been playing for a few hours and it does appear more polished with this iteration but there remains little depth. You need land to build population to get farms to mine ore. When you do enough of that you go somewhere else and restart it. If there was a story maybe there would be some depth.

You make Peter losing interest in fulfilling Kickstarter promises sound so carefree and non-consequential, like Godus just took on a mind of its own and prohibited elements like a story from being implemented out of some force of nature. It's a tad astounding.
I'm sure it will come down to a 22Cans trademarked technicality such as: "Oh, he did write a story for Godus, it's just not accessible to the player." <Yakety Sax theme playing in the background>

The story is happening. I'm not going to go into any detail right now or make you any promises, but the implementation is being designed right now and you will most likely see story start creeping it's way in late January.

The development of Godus has been quite the story already. Actually just put that in the game. A tiny Peter Molyneux appears and launches a Kickstarter to create the rest of the game ...
Or just write it out long-form, print it up, and send it to the backers as a hard-cover novel. Bed time reading!
