Thinking of picking it up as its £7.49 on humble store ATM, is it worth it? That seems quite steep as I think I only paid $20. It's not a bad sandbox game but I found it a bit dull after a while. I'm assuming it hasn't had any content updates. Of course doesn't humble money go to charity or something? The thing with banished is it was done by one guy and it's quite cute and if you accept it for that I think it's definitely worth that price.

The best way to play Banished is passively/casually, because after a while it gets a bit dull - as hardly said. There's no real goal or "winning scenario" the game just goes on perpetually. I suggest playing it until you get the hang of the balance and mechanics, and then try some mods, as they can add some more content to the game; such as professions, foliage, buildings, maps, etc. Still, there hasn't been any mod that actually adds anything more feature-wise, like combat or "tasks", and the creator didn't intend it to either (he specifically stated he doesn't plan to, ever). There have been a few patch updates, but that's about it. There really isn't even a story, other than vaguely; I'm not even sure why it's called "Banished" - where were they banished from, who banished them, and why?

Perhaps the real goal of the game is to keep playing until the little fellows develop artificial intelligence and start to comprehend what you've been doing and they banish you as a result. Game over.

I agree with most of the sentiments here. I'm not sorry I bought it. I think it was money well spent, I got my money's worth, and it's nice to support a great Dev. It does get dull after a while (as do all games to a certain extent, I suppose).

I'd say it's better at around £5.16 (assuming that conversion is correct), as that's about what I got it for ($8). It's a nice game to relax to, not unlike SimCity 4 or Cities: Skylines. Just build things up, let'em roll, see how things go and adjust as needed.

It looks a lot like Gnomoria. Both are games where you control citizens to build a city/kingdom. I think Banished has a few more hazards, fire, plague, etc. But if you like that kind of game give gnomoria a look too. It's kind of Dwarf Fortress lite, and for $8 I've put about 1300 hours into it. Games like that are a great time sink.

Fortress/colony games do have that bit of no "end" except to build your colony as best you can despite the presented dangers and management hurdles.
I haven't played this title myself, but I've heard good things about it.
I also have to second the recommendation for Gnomoria.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to check out Gnomoria now. I think my biggest issue with Banished isn't that there's no "end game", but that it pretty much plateaus after a certain point; once you get a handle on professions, resource production, and population control, there is no real incentive to expand or continue. And getting to that point only took me a short amount of time, so it quickly got tedious and trivial. There's no sudden unexpected danger or strife, it just goes on indefinitely whether you intervene or not. I don't want to call it lackluster, but it never really feels interesting or exciting. If there was a way to add more, something, to make it more interesting and increase the replay value, I could give it more praise. As it is, the mods are the only saving grace for me. Don't get me wrong, at its basic level it is a fantastic game, but just feels... incomplete.

Once you know how to do everything there's not a whole lot of challenge (yet), but the game is still being worked on and its actually currently being updated to make modding much easier. I go through phases where I play for a few weeks and then leave it for two, then pick it up for three, and so on. I've always come back to gnomoria, which is a lot more than I can say for most of my games. Also: being developed by one dude and still has a faster update schedule than godus.

Well, it wasn't much. I didn't even save the poor village. At the end, though, I loaded my more successful save to show that it was my failure, not balance problem.

I enjoyed Banished for what it was. Definitely can be difficult depending on what your New Game settings are. Parts of it definitely reminded me of some of the mechanics from the likes of Caesar III, which I played quite a bit as a young rapscallion. Personally, though, I enjoyed Cities Skylines more (I 100%'ed both), though the two are thematically different altogether. If you enjoy games like this though then you'll probably be pleased overall.

The only part I don't like is Hunting Cabin's range which is totally incompatible with the wild game's migration.

Oh, thanks! As I mentioned in the stream, I prefer to not use mods that add content that may be disharmonic with the original idea.
Which, of course, does not include bug fix, changed font, and small, non-critical customisations that should be in the base game in the first place (like specialized piles).

I've been eyeing Banished for a Mac port... One day, maybe.
