So I started a blog because I read shit and I want to write a response that goes beyond comments pages. So I'm going to do that, write about stuff I think is dumb, good, annoying, ill informed all of that. I probably wont write about GODUS (but never say never) as I feel like everything I'm going to want to say has been said. But if you want to read the other bollocks I write and disagree with it. Check it out.
crankandloon.wordpress.com
I cant promise it will be good but Im going to try and be good at it. I need a hobby.
Im not going to promote it amongst people who know me until Im confident I wont write something I want to be anonymous but the beauty of this place is you don't know who I am Muhahahaha! Unless you hacked me. You didn't hack me did you?

Cool. I've been considering doing a blog, too. But I haven't decided what, if anything the main focus would be.

I started a blog a long time ago. I just never posted on it. Bought a journal, never wrote in it. ...Turned it into an art piece for fleeting memories of life by lying and saying I wrote in it and carefully faded the writing away.

Now I'm reminded of an electronic photo frame that I purchased years ago and never really used. But I digress... back to blogging.

I would do a blog if I trusted my grammar skills more.

One thing that surprised me was it took a lot more time to write one post than I expected - about 3 hours flicking between adventure capitalist and the blog. I had to do a lot of "research" alongside writing to find facts and figures which was really time consuming. I knew the facts I wanted to refer to but I felt I needed to link to semi reputable sources to confirm exact numbers. From an enjoyment point of view Id like to be able to knock out a blog entry in an evening but I can see the quality will be better if I work on a draft over a couple of evenings. There are mistakes in my first post and some bits that could be improved. I'm going to MI5 tonight (free tickets) so I won't be able to do my next one until Saturday. It is fun though. If anyone wants to do a guest post to scratch the itch without setting one up that could happen. My blog is eclectic but it does have standards ?. Having said that it was incredibly easy to set up and get posting. Probably took 5 minutes.

Good read. This is why I tend to stick with old games.

By the way hardly, you should remove that first blog post, the short one that you didn't actually write.

Having said that it was incredibly easy to set up and get posting. Probably took 5 minutes. Many successful bloggers - and writers in general - work on multiple articles over a period of time, that way they're constantly churning things out. Always have one or two smaller topics ready to go, so that you can put out something if the bigger topics are taking longer than you expected. You can also always just do multiple follow-up posts if a topic it too big for a single post. Despite how it seems, this will keep you from feeling overwhelmed or pressured - which is key to keeping your motivation going - because you're not in a topic for too long and getting burned out or anxious that it's taking too long, or is too much info to sort through. And use a program like OneNote or Evernote (etc) to collect, and organize, your research. And yes, if it's not obvious, I've done a bit of research on this topic. lol. Best of luck!

Oh, also, just a tip.
In regards to your images; look into using jQuery or HTML5 or some kind of image-viewer plugin, so that they pop-out (in the same tab, not a pop-up) or expand when clicked; anything that causes the user to have to click "back" or to be force-navigated away can turn users off.

Thanks for the tips and support guys. It's certainly been an interesting process so far. I had a lot of assumptions about what it would be like to write blog posts and it is surprisingly quite different. But as I said in my posts I'm feeling a big tired of gaming so it is an enjoyable alternative.
I have to say the Wordpress platform is amazing. It's very easy to use and has great functionality. As you point out though I have a lot to learn about the formatting side of things.

I'm at work by the way so that is why my response is a bit crap. And I feel sick which makes my brain slow.

I totally forgot to add; good post.
I actually agree with, and totally relate to, the sentiments you've described in your blog. It's part of the reason that I, too, have been considering starting blogging - or writing articles - about gaming, among other topics. I've also considering doing some streaming, but looking for away to set it apart from the plethora of others doing the same thing. That particular hurdle has elluded me, and held me back from jumping in just yet... well, that and my poor organization, lack of commitment to something (other than my wife, lol), and doubting my own abilities.
If there's another piece of advice I can give you; don't let fear hold you back. Don't be afraid that your writing might not be up to par (it's fine, really, and remember you'll always improve with practice), or that your subject is uninteresting. Write for you, and nobody else - write what you are interested in and passionate about.
You've got a great start, keep moving forward.

Yeah, perhaps we'ved just crossed that line where it's more fun discussing games than playing them. I still love gaming though, I just don't love any of the games that have been released right now. I think as you say it's best to not worry too much about the quality, the quality will improve over time. Who was ever good at something the first time they tried it?

Hrm. Have you tried more narrative driven games (i.e. Gemini Rue, Longest Journey/Dreamfall, Life is Strange, etc.)? Those always strike me as a nice palette cleanser to the more prevalent arcadey (which I count even open world games among, these days) games. Besides that, Endless Legend and Space might be a refreshing switch from Civ in some ways, especially Legend. I've not picked it up yet, but seems like people found themselves enjoying it much more than Endless Space. Oh, and I know it's yet-another-survival-game, but Don't Starve if played without checking wikis constantly might give you a good sense of discovery and progression, maybe.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd like to try out the narrative games you mention, it's been a while since I've played anything like that. I'll put them on my steam Wishlist. I have both endless space and endless legend. They are ok. I actually liked endless space better although I know endless legend got good reviews. Don't starve is actually quite cool but brutally hard! I should go back to that and give it another look. Part of the problem is I have become a short attention span gamer. I admire people who are completionists and I know I need to be more disciplined.
