I find myself using two separate kinds of games as a palate cleanser; - Point & Click Adventures; narrative driven, challenge abstract though and creativity, good humor, usually slow paced but engrossing, thought provoking stories.
- Classic Arcade style games; Fast paced, quick, easy to jump in and out of, don't require a lot of time or thought.
Granted, even then, I often find myself losing enthusiasm to even start them up.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd like to try out the narrative games you mention, it's been a while since I've played anything like that. I'll put them on my steam Wishlist. I have both endless space and endless legend. They are ok. I actually liked endless space better although I know endless legend got good reviews. Don't starve is actually quite cool but brutally hard! I should go back to that and give it another look. Part of the problem is I have become a short attention span gamer. I admire people who are completionists and I know I need to be more disciplined. Nah, I know that feeling about short attention span stuff. I've basically tried to organize my games into smaller groups and commit myself to playing through them. I kind of stalled out on that awhile ago due to one in the first group having uneven difficulty, but before that I was making my way through a game every few days (to be fair, shorter games were in this grouping). However, outside of that group, I've drifted to more level/mission based games and try to finish at least a mission a day in each. I've been meaning to get back to that initial set of games, but in the meantime I've finished up Blocks That Matter, Silent Hill 1, Drakengard 3, Silent Hill 2, and Zero Escape 1 thanks to this loose method. A really good resource to help gauge game length to help decide which games to play, by the way, is How Long to Beat. I sort of use a mix of that and my general interest at the time to determine what games to play out of the vague organization I have in my head of them, and hey, it sort of works. What killed me for the longest time was trying to pick between the more focused games and the more "arcadey" games. I love arcadey stuff as much as the next guy, much as I love the occasional dumb action movie, but that stuff gets pretty dull after awhile as you've found. So, for me, any game that has a lot of fluff content like uninvolved side tasks and relies heavily on you repeating stuff has become to me the new arcade style of game, whereas games that mostly get to and stick to the point are more focused games...Which are generally way easier to keep my attention on, interest in, and play all the way through. Not the best distinction ever, maybe, but it's helped me both in deciding what to play as well as what to buy when it comes to games. Do I want something that truly ends, or do I want something that thinks I don't want it to ever end? Granted, even then, I often find myself losing enthusiasm to even start them up. Same here, honestly. Maybe less classic arcade, but arcade in general, like Super Hexagon, Revolver Reactor 360, Katamari Damacy, etc. Great games to just get some satisfying action in every now and then.

I've added another game related entry about a Civ 5 game we played last night. Along with a write up of events that may or may not appeal, I talk about the settings we use and a mod we are using. We've also struck a save game issue that was preventing us loading saves. Sounds like an interesting way to play. Yeah, I have 425 hours on Civ5 so its nice to find ways to jazz things up. The no communication part of it is key because it creates surprise and a little bit of chaos as people walk back other people's strategies. When you have your turn you get a surprise as to what you'll find, then you get to read all the blog posts to fill in the picture which tells you the story of the intervening period.

You get a group of people together who like to play civ5. Four or five people feels about optimum. One person sets up a game and plays a certain amount of turns - 50 seems to work well on standard speed. At the conclusion of their turns they pass the save to the next person. As they play they take notes and screenshots so they can write up their turns. We treated it like a creative writing exercise with people trying to write in character but you don't have to. We posted these on a blog but you don't have to post them publicly, you could just share them amongst the group using google docs or something. In your write up you talk about significant events, big decisions, strategy trade offs, etc. this is great for learning about the game. It's important that people don't read people's write ups or communicate between their turns. This maintains the uncertainty factor and the surprise when you open the game 150 turns later. When you load the save you are trying to figure out what the previous person was working on and whether it was a good idea. As I said I found it really fun. The logistics of passing the save between people and working turns into work and family commitments was a little bit annoying but we got there in a couple of weeks.
