22cans signs deal to launch Godus in ChinaBy James BatchelorMolyneux’s studio will team up with LongTu Games to take the god game to the EastGodus may have sparked controversy in its home territory, but that hasn’t stopped 22cans taking the title to new markets. The studio has today announced a new partnership with Chinese web and mobile games publisher LongTu Games, which will see Godus localised and published across various app stores in China. Established in 2008, LongTu has brought a number of Western games to China, such as Marvel Contest of Champions and Daota Legend. “Compared with the current development status of Western gaming industries, China’s is still very young and fluid in nature,” said LongTu CEO Shenghui Yang. “The new co-operation between LongTu Games and 22cans represents an interflow and exchange of originality and experience. Both sides will have plenty to learn from each other. “We hope this new partnership will allow us to learn more about Western gaming ideology from a true gaming industry icon in Peter Molyneux.” 22cans CEO Simon Phillips added: “By partnering with successful publishers around the world, our ideas can be truly global. We are excited to announce a partnership with LongTu Games that will see our successful game Godus come to China.” We recently interviewed Phillips about the morale at the studio following controversy around Godus earlier this year, as well as the status of its founder Peter Molyneux. You can read the full interview here.

I thought they launched in China last year. Didn't they use it as an excuse for a long period of silence/no updates?

I also assumed that Godus was already in China, but nevermind. This is probably a good thing for Godus, especially if China is an emerging market. Extra revenue means extra funds for the company. Extra interest in Godus will promote further development. Unfortunately for us, it would be mobile development - 22Cans has spoken several times about the challenges of keeping up with demand for mobile content, and Mobile Godus is undeniably the money-maker.
I would be interested to know if increased interest in the mobile version leads to more PC customers. For example, many people despise microtransactions, so they might try Godus out on mobile then buy it on the PC to try to bypass F2P mechanics. Or, people who enjoy playing Godus on mobile might tell their friends about it, and they in turn might prefer PC gaming so buy it off Steam. I believe that presently, the price-point of PC Godus is way too high, not least because it's severely lacking in content.
It's too late for 22Cans to republish PC-Godus as a F2P with microtransactions (same as mobile) but they should at least consider reducing the standard price to £6.99 or perhaps lower. I don't say this because this is what I want for Godus. I say this as a businessperson viewing Godus in the context of "commercial viability".

The Chinese market is notoriously fractured when it comes to getting good discovery on nearly all formats. The deal with Longtu is to bring mobile (ios / android) and PC/Mac versions there. They are taking care of the localisation and any culturalisation that might be needed (that and a whole heap of server switch over stuff!). Their markets are even more-so (almost exclusively) F2P too and the current discussion is about them actually making the PC version F2P to suit. It will be interesting to see how that works out. Launch dates there will be finalised very soon. There is certainly a degree of cross promotion between PC and Mobile sales both ways (i.e. if Godus is featured on AppStore then there is a lift in PC and if there is a Steam promotion then there can be a slight increase in Mobile downloads).
