I know they hate being compared to Godus, but... multiplayer has been the demise of Godus. A massively over-hyped, elaborately described Jupiter-sized blah blah, only when it boiled down to it 22Cans couldn't even get over the most fundamental hurdle of servers and networking. My impression of progress on the Universim is that they're still trying to get its basic core functionality in place, so it seems a little premature to be adding stretch-goals.

Can anyone playing in the pre alpha report on progress? Is the game going anywhere?

I have not played the latest build yet. But between the first and second build I did see improvements. It may be slow going but I am OK with that and really OK that they finally stopped setting streach goals and will use any farther money they get to help progress of what they have planned.

there is not enough to Report is just 20 minutes playtime

Thank goodness they finally cut off add-ons and stretch goals; it was starting to feature creep to the point that its never be attainable. Even now, they already have so much on the slate I'm not sure how they'll ever launch.
