Update 41 - 22/03/2013Frustrated DesignersPeter and Jack are frustrated. Seriously. Really, really frustrated. It's been almost two weeks since they've been able to play a proper game of Godus. It's not all bad but that's just the way designers are; they want to be able to play their games all day long, at every moment. That's not how the reality of game development works... Watch our Godus Update with Peter and Jack #12 to find out why.

Update 42 - 28/03/2013Rejoice!This week Peter and Jack are in a better mood following last week's inability to play Godus. Now that the game is up and running in the new engine, the designers have been able to start implementing different experiments with the GUI (Graphical User Interface). This concerns all of the buttons and other information on screen to help the player interact with the world. Peter leads an exploration of the art department to catch up with Dictator of Art, Paul McLaughlin, on the challenges of making a beautiful, intuitive, and clean GUI theme for a god game. We also catch a couple of glimpses of the game in action as well as a brief look at the VFX. Put your feet up and enjoy another visit to the 22cans studio with video update #13

Update 43 - 04/04/2013Freezing!All is not so cosy in the April chill of Guildford. After a tease of sunlight the 22canners are forced in from the cold once more. But that's not a problem when being inside means creating wonderful things. Peter and Jack discuss the design of the earthquake god power, before revisiting Pieter to see how his water FX have improved since we viewed his work on last weeks video. Enjoy this week's update! Follower them : Peter (@pmolyneux) and Jack (@jakamofo).

Update 44 - 12/04/2013Sitting down with James LeachOne of our stretch goals back in December last year, was bringing the fabulous writer James Leach on board to help write the story of Godus. In this week's video update, Peter and Jack meet up with him. Obviously they'd like to stay clear of spoilers and so the discussion is more about the bigger picture and they talk about stories in games and films in general, picking their favourites. Jack cops out on every question... Finally, the guys discuss the perils of the infamous writer's block and how to solve it, with an impromptu solution to the problem; a little booklet.

Update 45 - 19/04/2013Watch us LiveHello backers, We have started to experiment with our live webcam again now that Godus is in full production and we are gearing up for the Alpha. Our Twitch.tv channel is live and can be found on Twitch. You can also watch previous broadcasts there, such as the closing stages of our Kickstarter campaign in December of last year. We even do the gangnam style (embarassing moment!). Today (Friday 19th April) the stream is open to everyone (and before you ask, there is no sound today) but starting on Monday we'll turn the camera on as often as possible, for which you will need a password. The password is.... godusbackers and there is also a chat function if you want to ask us something or have a special request. Finally, there will be moments where we do turn the audio on. As we get closer and closer to the Alpha we might also start showing the game on the feed and play together with all of you who can play the Alpha. More on that later. Have a good weekend everyone and be sure to check back in on Monday on Twitch. All the best, 22cans

Update 46 - 24/04/2013Navigation, Scrum and SprintsHello backers, On Monday the team sat down to go through their plans and workload for Sprint 7. We are now streaming live from the studio, which may be mildly and ironically NSFW but you can find us here (password is godusbackers). People who were logged into the stream were treated to some additional insights into the meeting on Monday and for those who missed the stream (from Monday 22nd April) we have a transcript below, which you can also find on the forums here should you want to discuss any of these topics further. The alpha should be released during or soon after after Sprint 8 (mid-May timeframe) - if all goes according to plan. A sprint generally is a two week cycle, during which a daily scrum is done in the morning by members of the team to talk through their individual work items for that day and week ( read more about scrum development here). If everything goes to plan this style of reporting will continue for every sprint meeting in the future, which will be an extra update every two weeks. Sprint 7 Meeting Paraphrased Transcript;First part is with the programmersPeter opens meeting; Compliments coders on job well done. Minor swearing (reason unknown) Notification that Sprint 7 is to add playability and polish, for the Alpha. Topic turns to sculpting; Minecraft is mentioned, laughing what they ended up doing in that game. (Minecraft is one of Peter's favorites) Audio is very important to sculpting, so much that people will almost do it with their eyes closed.Topic turns to GUI / UI; What needs to be done for the Alpha release of Godus? Taking the art and designs that have been done so far, and implementing that into the game.Balancing is discussed as it is. Audio is very important for the Alpha Beautification of a god power is mentioned as equally important. Topic turns to the sea level in the current version, Some stuff that is currently secret is discussed, Topic turns to implementation of 'scorched land.'There is some talk about going back to the design table for abodes. Mud Hut is mentionedWhile not technically a mud hut (this is a tent) we presume this what they were referring to.Some more secret stuff. And finally, point#22 is about a visual distinction between followers and town life followers. These are the explorer followers which have to look very different from normal followers. From here the meeting goes off deeper into the individual items, not repeated because 'too much boring technical detail' is involved. The talk moves on to Dimiti's navigation. What is important is that players understand what the villagers are doing and the why of that navigation (rocks are used as an example)And with that, this part of the sprint meeting is done... The programmers are now excused to leave the meeting, knowing what they need to do this coming sprint, sprint #7.Next group will be the artistsPeter does the main bit of talking in this kind of meeting; "We're here to talk about the next sprint", says Peter. He tells them everyone did fantastically well. A lot of it is a repeat of what the programmers got told, so it is not repeated for us.The same list of 22 items as was discussed with the programmers is went through. Sculpting needs particle effects for Alpha. The coders loved all the GUI concepts the new GUI artists did, and so they are going to be put into the game this sprint. Very important for the Alpha Still a lot of work on the in-game GUI.This sprint is going to be a focus on audio, including the GUI audio and also start working on 'wrapper screens'. (Start up screens, ect...)Another item is mentioned, though this is held secret. To keep it a surprise for when [you] play the alpha.Animation of the little followers will need to be implemented by Pavle. A helicopter is mentioned, but is likely not relevant to Godus. The sea needs a surface. (again an effect) which might be pushed out. While technically not a sea (this is a river) it does show the visual quality of the water that the team aims to achieve. It looks rather good doesn’t it? Mud Hut is mentioned again.Balance files are briefly mentioned. With no further detail or discussionPeter says; "And if you haven't got enough work, I'd like to throw in an extra for you artists..." (Undisclosed what)Finally Peter reminds everyone about the gauntlet he put down in regards to the framerate of the game. The conversation between Peter and the artists is great, very detailed. Even though it doesn't seem like it, their questions do affect gameplay. Belief is mentioned, and if you can see it as a prayer. Someone asks "What does belief look like?" Someone mentions purple.People in the meeting cross reference the original Black&White and the popping activation sound of the 'miracle seeds'. Thinking now turns in a different direction. The meeting returns to rocks and trees. Peter uses lego to illustrate what he's sayingAnd with that the meeting is over! The artists are excused and can now leave the meeting room as well. But they stay. Finally, the design team (consisting of Peter and Jack) have a new member on their team: Jamie! For this week’s video update, Peter and Jack introduce their newest member of the team, we have a mano-to-mano stand off between Dimitri and Pavle on coding group behaviour and take a brief look at the latest iteration of the GUI. 22cans

Update 47 - 02/05/2013New video update! Alpha is almost upon us!Hey there backers! So yes! Things have been immensely busy here at the Cannery. This sprint has been packed to the brim with hot new features, a lot of which we will leave to you alpha backers to discover in a couple of short weeks! Because of this we all have our heads down even more so than usual, which makes it a bit hard to update you guys as much as we’d like to, but what we all want is an amazing god game and it’s truly wonderful to see it unfold. We’re still a long way from the finish line so there are a shed load of imperfections and ugliness that still needs to be smoothed over, but this is the true nature of game development. The wonderful thing about this kickstarter and others is that where in the past you and I would only see a game when it was announced at a conference like E3 at which point only a polished portion of a game is seen with a lot of smoke and mirrors. Being able to check the early stages of Godus this way is a pretty cool thing to share and we can see what you guys think of it when we read your comments on the youtube, the kickstarter, and the forums. A lot of the team agree however that for this stage in development the game is in a superb state! On my side we’ve got our audio middleware working for the first time which is a breathe of fresh air. You can really immerse yourself in the world you are creating. Naturally at this early stage we use very basic placeholder sounds just to get an idea of how the functionality of the game translates into sonic feedback for the player, and after alpha there will be a audio makeover to make the game sound utterly beautiful. Our headcount is steadily increasing also. As you saw last week we have Jamie, our technical designer, on the team now and it has been great fun getting to understand each other and working out the dynamic in the design department. We also have a couple of programmers starting soon, so expect to be introduced to them in the following weeks after Alpha. In other news, Curiosity has reached the FINAL 50 LAYERS. There’s a new trailer out on our page where you can check out what the world has been doing with the cube, but don’t forget to download it on iOS and Android and have a little bash. There are many outlooks one can have on the experiment from being a waste of time to a work of art, but get stuck in and see for yourself! Either way, we’re all dying to know what’s inside the cube. One thing we can be certain on however, is that it is life changing for one lucky individual. We also got nominated for two Develop Awards, which is nice! And we've been hearing from a lot of you who have been watching us on the studio webcam. We are slowly forgetting it's there so each day is a little more nerve-racking. Anyhow let’s wrap this up as I need to get back to tweaking the design of the game and fixing sound bugs and all sorts! Remember to keep in touch with the Godus Community and check out the new video link below! See you next week! Peace and love, Jack @jakamofo

They talk about a range of topics but on top of their list is the Alpha and two problems we're facing... You can watch the recorded play test session on our Twitch channel and remember if you're in the vicinity of Guildford and available next week on Tuesday, Peter explains in the latest video update what you can do to be part of our next session. Update 50 - 18/05/2013Video update with Peter, Jack and Jamie #19Hello backers, This is our 50th update, in just under six months since we had a successful Kickstarter campaign. As always we want to repeat our heartfelt thanks to all our backers. Our designers Peter, Jack and Jamie have been busy playing Godus and so this week's video update is a little mash-up of clips we recorded over the last week. Peter has been staying up late playing GODUS, trying to get enough belief for the Beautify god power. We'd also like to remind all of you to complete the survey you received on Kickstarter here (especially if you want to get the Alpha etc...) plus register on our forums on www.22cans.com/forum. If you have but haven't been activated yet then please leave a comment with your username. It will be really useful for everyone to be on the forums as it will be a way to give feedback on the Alpha and later the Beta too. We'll be back early next week with another update! 22cans

Update 53 - 01/06/2013Alpha Feedback update with Peter, Jack and JamieHello backers, What a week it's been, last Sunday Curiosity - what's inside the cube finished and we found out what's inside. On Wednesday we released the Godus Alpha version to our Alpha Backers. A lot of people mentioned " Life of Bryan". The team has been collecting all of your feedback, analysing the analytics and of course we've been reading your messages on social media and forums. It's wonderful to see how much you've been playing and your (mostly) positive reactions give the team a great feeling about making the game better. Peter, Jack and Jamie run you through the feedback report; things that are unclear, things you disliked and finally some of the suggestions that we picked up (and of course also bugs). Peter also answers a phone call from a very special person and so does Jack. Get your study caps on! You can see the video (watch out it's 23 minutes long) on our YouTube channel. Finally, the image below was posted by Blessedspirit from the "The gentlemans club" clan, who was the first person to post about a hidden statue he found in his Homeworld on the Godus Alpha forums. -22cans

They also catch up with the developers on what's next for the game and the upcoming Godus Alpha Update. Finally they also bring up a question for our existing Alpha players, we've started a poll on the forums to seek your input. As always you can find the video on our YouTube channel (don't forget to subscribe) on this page. Update 55 - 16/06/2013God of Gods Backers at E3 with 22cansHello everyone, The biggest gaming event of the year took place earlier this week in Los Angeles; E3. As part of our Kickstarter campaign we promised to take our God of Gods Backers to the conference and that's exactly what we've done. We stayed in a lovely hotel on Hollywood Boulevard close to the Chinese Theatre, we watched the press conferences and discussed as gamers what was shown. The God of Gods spend a lot of time with Peter looking at and talking about Godus plus they explored the show together and played many different and some of the hottest games in town. We've made a short summary video about the week, expect more video clips from E3 on our YouTube channel in the following days. Also this is an urgent but important reminder for our other backers. There are around 350 people who haven't completed their backer survey yet. When you check out our Kickstarter page and you're logged in and are a backer you should see a button (or link) asking you to fill in your survey. Most of you have done this already but please double check as we'll be closing the survey on June 21st 2013 and if you haven't filled out and completed your survey by that date we will have to make some assumptions on your behalf. If you don’t complete the survey by June 21st, you will still receive your goods. However; - You will receive the default size and colour of t-shirt rather than your chosen size and colour.
- You will have your t-shirt signed by the whole team @22cans.
- We need you to let us know whether you purchased an add-on with your original tier pledge and therefore which gift you would like.
- Your shipping details will default to the original address you registered with Kickstarter (by filling out the survey, you have an option where your goodies need shipping)
- If you are a student backer we need you to confirm your place of study, to ensure that your university/college or school has a chance of winning the guest lecture from Peter Molyneux. If you miss the deadline you will not be counted in the totals.
- If you backed a tier that allowed you multiple copies of the game that you would like to gift, then you need to complete the survey in order to let us know who they are.
- In order to be followed on twitter or to take part in a design Skype call we need you to supply your details.
Peter visited Gamespot to talk about and show off Godus. You can see the clip here. That's it for this week everyone, we'll be back to normal service next week. Have a lovely Sunday. -22cans

Update 56 - 22/06/2013Player Motivation in GodusHello everyone, With E3 finished we're back to a full team at 22cans! Peter and Jack expose the new game concepts that will drive motivation for players... Jack feels the musical vibes, Peter refuses to Jam. Several new game features are discussed in this week's update, which we will start seeing in future updates to the Alpha and Beta versions but we wanted to get the word out as no doubt this will spark debate and ideas within our community! In other news, remember that our Kickstarter survey will be closing this Monday! Pretty much everyone has now filled out their survey but there's a handful of people still missing. Everything is in motion to start sending out physical rewards such as teeshirts and posters and everything else! It was only yesterday (Friday) that we took delivery of the tubes that will ship the poster add-ons, there's quite a lot of them as you can see in the following picture...we'll keep posting pictures as things happen! We're catching up with your emails about forum access, so please have a little more patience. All emails about forum access should be dealt with by Monday (especially true for our Late Believers). If after Monday your account hasn't been activated then please drop us an email (but feel free to leave a comment on this update as well posting your username). Take care everyone! 22cans

Update 57 - 29/06/2013Godus Update with Peter and Jack #24Dear backers, It's that time of the week again; a brand new video update with Peter and Jack is waiting for you on our YouTube channel. We're paying extra attention to the 22cans Godus forums this week, so Peter and Jack lay to rest concerns about the role of the curiosity winner Bryan who will be the god of gods in Godus through much elaboration. They also have a small play-through of the game to show non-Alpha backers early glimpses of the game and to talk about how gems work (and not work). The version they are playing is a later version than what the Alpha players are currently playing - so you will see some of your feedback incorporated already. That's your feedback making Godus a better game. Peter also reveals how the world of Godus is the size of Jupiter now, just to beat @notch and Minecraft... Finally Peter also wonders if Jack will get a date from the video update? Next week we hope to show you a multiplayer battle and finally show off the first spectacular god power; meteor! A few weeks ago, Peter met up with the lovely people from TheNextWeb and talked about 22cans, Godus and Curiosity. You can find the interview on this page, it makes for interesting reading (in the park or on the sofa). Have a great weekend everyone!

Update 58 - 07/07/2013Godus Update with Peter and Jack #25Dear Backers, The sun is out in England (it's warm, really really warm) and so the smell of barbecue fills the air. Not only that, there's also quite a lot of pollen going around. The team have been quite busy developing the discoveries and civilisation features that we discussed in recent weeks. The designers have been shacked up in our boardroom throwing all sorts of paper around getting to the core of some ideas which we hope to shed light on in the coming weeks. Peter and Jack are a little under the weather this week with hay-fever (barbecue or pollen) although it may be something far worse. Only time will tell. That doesn't get in the way of our passion for Godus however. God powers are coming together nicely and we show you a sneak peak in this weeks video below. You also get a glimpse of concepts for day and night in homeworld. Peter, Jamie and Jack have been giving multiplayer a good bash but finding that it's not quite ready to show yet. Hopefully Fabs will have some fixes in soon so that we can bring you all up to speed there. We've been getting some of the pledge reward stuff through as well, which is exciting. Amongst all of the tasks we have in line for release, Gary has finally had a chance to get his claws into dynamic water. Peter literally dreams of that dynamic water. It's wet. Rather than going on we shall leave you with this video update. Our 22canner Becky seems to have a little bit of a fan base on some of our youtube comments section so we give her arms a rest from holding the camera this time to squeeze in a short interview at the end. Peace and love, 22cans

Update 59 - 13/07/2013Godus Update with Jack and without Peter #26Hello everyone, We've got quite a bit of information to get through this week, as the mercury is about to hit 30 degrees centigrade (or 86 fahrenheit) in England it's smiles all around and it's not just the weather that's a reason to be happy! Firstly, the annual DEVELOP AWARDS took place earlier this week in Brighton, England. These awards honour the development of video games and award studios across a range of categories. They are voted for by the development community itself rather than a panel of judges so it is a very honourable prize to receive. It was a big night and we saw 18 different games firms take home key accolades. The majority of the awards went to UK studios after a strong year for games businesses in all forms – independent, online/social, mobile and console. Curiosity - what's inside the cube? won the accolade for ONLINE INNOVATION, making for a lot of happy developers around the studio. You can find the full list of winners here. Secondly, our lead programmer, the amazing Gary Leach discusses how we established a new development pipeline with a lot of technical details. Developers need tools to make the delightful Godus and so Gary runs you through our choice for the core engine, particle system, a strong audio system, user interface and finally the supporting infrastructure, including version management, continuous integration and bug tracking. "Our highly iterative design process is all about light descriptions, followed by fast, data-driven changes. On top of that, we need to support multiple platforms, devices and specifications, from low-end phone all the way up to high-end desktop machines. We want to have just one codebase for each game that can be tweaked and tuned for each target specification." You can read the entire article with all the juicy pipeline details here. Thirdly, physical rewards. We're making steady progress on getting the teeshirts, posters, figurines and all that jazz sorted. In the following picture you see some of the posters being packed (or is that rolled?) up for sending out and as you can see, there's quite a lot of them… Fourthly, we found out which university won the games design masterclass with Peter at their institution. Students from Teesside University came out top in the number of Kickstarter Godus student backers. Peter will now visit Teesside University later this year, where he will give an exclusive masterclass on video games design. You can find out more about this on their website as well. And finally, this week's video update! With Peter not in the office (he's at an undisclosed location) we catch up with several different team members to give you some glimpses of what they're working on; early multiplayer code, meteors, wind, fire, production, new abodes, weather mockups, and more! That's it for this week, if you are lucky enough to have sunny warm weather then please go outside and get some vitamin D. One Love 22cans

Update 60 - 20/07/2013What's about to happen...Godus update with Peter, Jack and Jamie Hello you, After a couple of weekly updates that showed a lot of new and exciting features that are currently being worked on, things have shifted gear in the studio. Now entering the next stage of development, the design team are assessing how to be efficient with the elements that are in the current builds in order to avoid the temptation of adding more and more features. People have been reporting on the forums and also on Twitter (e.g. link and link) that they've received their Godus poster, if you have post a picture and let us know (obviously you don't have to)! Have a great weekend everyone. 22cans
