So, some of you might know of my...connections to the history of Fallout, something of a Scribe of the secret histories. I'll leave it at that for now.
I have been thinking about sharing some of these bits of interesting information for fans, who might not know about the origins of their favourite characters. One of these is a rather common robot in the setting, around since the first Fallout. A good thing, too, since the developer who inspired the robot has been around since the start.
Meet Mr. Dave Hendee.
On the Fallout forums, if you had a concern, a problem, anything, he would address it to the best of his ability and was there regularly despite it not being his job. His enthusiasm around the game was inspiration, both upon forums and in the team itself.
On the forums, a spammer by the name of GRIM REAPER was a common nuisance. Nothing really bad, "I fvcked your mum" about the most offensive thing he could provide, but on the whole was really just a lad from Oz looking to get a rise. You may know of this through a Fallout 2 Special Encounter if you weren't there yourself - The Unwashed Villagers Fighting A Spammer. That was a bit of community immortalisation, one of the first. Again - not even his job, as he was a designer, but yet Dave was a common feature upon the Interplay forums.
Dave Handy, the Hubologist character in Fallout 2
His grave humour in Fallout 2
Dave Hendee was Community Management before the word was part of common use, and so he is immortalised in a robot that you might see every day in the wasteland but never have known its true origins.
Until today - every time you think of Mr. Handy, think of unparalleled and enthusiastic interaction between a developer and their community that was part of the magic behind why Fallout was so amazing in the first place.
As Paul Harvey would say: And now you know...the rest of the story!
Oh, and you can thank Dave for the Brotherhood of Steel.
Special Encounter: Let's just say that having Jeff Bennett voice a character I inspired was amazing...and I think it might have even compared to my mate MCA's problem with bladder control with the Narrator.
For the next one, I'm thinking...Origins of Jet/Fission-Fusion Themes/Origin of the DeathClaw. Any preferences between those or anything else come to mind?
