I just watched The Last Airbender. Saw it a couple of times before.
I know it's a bad movie but I find there's something appealing about it nonetheless. In fact, I think the concept of it is pretty damn awesome. It's just that the execution is appalling.
M. Night Shyamalan made the movie as a kids movie. Big mistake. The original series might have been for kids, but when you turn something like that into a live action movie you want to aim for all audiences. Imagine if Star Wars would have been created just for kids. It would never have been as big a success.
There are many flaws in the movie but I guess I'm one of those people who can choose to ignore them, at least mostly.
The acting certainly isn't top notch, it's pretty piss poor in fact. That goes for all of the actors involved so that says a lot. Perhaps some of the people who are in it as extras who don't have any lines at all could be considered of doing a better job than the main characters, but maybe that is because of the fact they have no lines.
Choreography could have been better. It had some good stuff and some bad stuff. I think if a good choreographer put a lot of effort into it the element bending movements could be made to suit the visual effects way better. Sometimes it just seemed out of sync and more often it seemed way over the top or not to visually match up with the effects.
As far as the story goes, in a way the movie seems to go through it quite fast, while at the same time not telling much. At first I thought that was a contradiction but actually it is not. The movie feels this way because it's not fleshed out enough. Because of that it appears to jump from scene to scene. There could be much much more of a story in between. I think that you could easily turn this one movie into two movies or even a trilogy, which is ironic because this movie was intended to be the first of a trilogy. If only Shyamalan had slowed things down and taken his time. Time to flesh out the story and time to flesh out the characters, especially the main character.
I call for a complete reboot. Someone should re-write the story. And a decent production team should work on the movie. Perhaps Peter Jackson could direct it. Something like that. And Shyamalan should not be involved in any way at all.
According to wikipedia the budget for The Last Airbender was 150 million dollars. Holy shit! I looked up the budget for The Lord of the Rings and Google told me it was 93 million dollars. Who would have thought. Imagine how much better those airbending dollars could have been spent.
Have you seen The Last Airbender? What do you think?
