It's been a long time coming.
For over two and a half years, this forum has followed the state of affairs regarding Godus. Together, we have lived through the ups and the downs, but mostly the downs. It has been quiet on the Godus front for quite some time now. Apart from a minuscule convulsion when Godus Wars was "released", in reality there hasn't been much going on for over a year. The communications from 22cans stopped long ago, they don't even employ a public relations spokesperson anymore and when they did, as far as we can tell, that person was not really allowed to communicate anything anyway. The original Godus has not been updated. It has recently become apparent that both Godus and its afterbirth called Godus Wars have been abandoned by the studio.
There were times in the past where this forum was the pinnacle of the "Godus community", for as far as there was such a thing. It's been a haven for disgruntled Kickstarter backers and early access victims. Here it was where they could make themselves be heard when on the official 22cans and Steam forums they could not or were being censored and silenced. At times, the media made use of information that was posted here to publicly address the abysmal management of the project. In a way, although we are an insignificant little forum in the grand scheme of things, we were at the forefront of what in retrospect to me seems very much like a battle. Maybe it was a battle, a battle between the victimized individuals who forked over their cash for what they were hoping would be the next stage in evolution of the god game genre on one side and the lying, scheming, backstabbing, out for money grabbing indy development studio on the other side. It appears that none of it really mattered in the end, but still, I think we did make a difference.
All things said and done, I think the time has finally come. It is time, to put an end to it. It is time, to say farewell to godus.boards.net...
...and usher in a new era! An era with a brand new forum name. Did you think we were calling it quits? Well then I had you fooled! We are going nowhere! We're here to stay. We'll keep following Godus and report on any information we might come across. It will just no longer be our reason for existence. If there's one good thing that has come out of this whole Godus mess it's that people have come together to form a great community and we don't intend to let this community die along with Godus. We will simply shift our focus away from Godus and towards other stuff, basically whatever may feel appropriate.
In that sense, I was quite pleasantly surprised to be approached near the end of last year by echocdelta, the lead designer behind project Genesis. Emre Deniz (his actual name) was apparently an original backer of Godus and had been a long time lurker here. His aim is to develop a brand new godgame and to do this alongside with the community. We are highly appreciative of this initiative and hope that Genesis will grow into a benchmark to which future godgames will be compared and a shining example on how to use crowd-sourcing in game design and development. In any case, whichever road the project may take, I will be following it with great interest.
Since for the time being Genesis will form the new backbone as far as this forum is concerned, I thought it would be fair to reach out to the Opaque Media team members who are working on the project and are members of the forum to ask for their input on a new forum name. They have discussed it briefly and put forth the name godgames.boards.net.
The team members of project Genesis are right now working hard to get a demo ready in time for the impending deadline (July 6th) in order to submit it for PAX Australia, which is an Australian indie showcase. As this "unveiling" of the project may or may not generate some new traffic to the forum, I would like to have a new forum name in place before that happens.
Of course, we here (the administrators and moderators) have always felt that we are first and foremost members of the community and we have tried to let the forum members regulate themselves and the community as much as we could. It only makes sense that we try to involve all members of the community with something as important as this name change.
For this reason, I am asking all of you for your input. What do you think would be a good new name for this forum?
