I played The Trail today out of <no pun intended> Curiosity!
Beautiful game, I'll give it that. Poorly optimised grass graphics were mildly irritating. Trees within the forests pop right out of the ground in front of you, as if the "draw distance" is set rather low on iOS. At certain points if you have a look around to attempt to locate points of reference (giant mountains) they simply aren't there, which ruins the immersion a bit. Every once in a while leaving or entering a camp my character would get confused and bug out all over the place, eventually finding her way. Freemium currency and adverts are hinted at in the first 5 minutes of play and introduced within about 10 minutes. Unsurprisingly, nearly every damn thing you do in the game is designed to be monetised. Soft paywall was hit at about 12 minutes in.
I was able to play until the second river without picking up a single item that I wasn't forced to in the tutorial, which was somewhat of a laugh. The guide continually muttered something about " how I was forgetting to pick up "X" thing", and how she would give them to me anyway, ugh.
Rivers act as a paywall of sorts. If you can't pay the ferry toll, you have the option of returning to a previous camp and collecting items from there.
Insidious red bird person shows up CONSTANTLY interrupting your journey asking you to click to watch a movie for a free gift. I would hope that this goes away or frequency is reduced if you actually do pay something in the game... but knowing how nose-deaf 22cans is to anything mildly annoying mechanic-wise, I have my doubts.
Cheers to the old guard who still read this page!

Do you think this game could do well financially?

If I had to guess, I'd say yes. However.. it could be perceived by the younger generation of gamer as quite boring.

I managed to play this game for about 10mins or so. As soon as the minecraft ripoff crafting grid appeared I'd had enough.
