And finally godus inspired me to make a small progress on my own god game: one where you decide what is good and evil, by answering prayers and punishing/rewarding. People come to you with questions about daily life and what you answer will shape how they live. You can tell them to bury their dead, or burn them or ignore the bodies. Want to have as a first commandment You shall kill/steal etc., fine. Your own god game? Do tell! Unless you don't want to reveal your top secret plans off course, we understand.

A woman needs to look different from a man. I can't do that with one pixel so i might go up to 4 (2x2). As you can see I didn't take this project completely serious. I didn't start with a plan and timelines and made tasks, because I have enough of that at work. I started with coding a bit because that feels good and so it's rather doomed.

Are you afraid if you make the followers too big and give too much control over them it will start to feel like the Sims? I really like the Sim but I do think sending them to the bathroom was way way way overboard. They just soil themselves if you don't and that is just plain gross. If you could find the perfect mix between a God game and the Sims, that I would love to play.

Well if you'd have to use project planning it'd be less of a hobby. Which tools are you using for your game development?
I have just started looking at jMonkeyEngine and Blender and am looking forward to taking my first steps into game development. Purely as a hobby for now. I'd like to get a hang of putting some 3D graphics on screen first before I start on the rest.

I'm using XNA because I took a course from Coursera on it. Awesome! Is that course still around? What was it called? I once took a Coursera course "Introduction to Databases". Actually that was just before Coursera started, back then it was still Stanford Online I believe. I looked into some Udacity courses as well. Got halfway through the 3D programming course with THREEjs. I have to go back to some of those sometime. Is anyone else out there secretly working on their own game project?

So you could create a society where it's fine to have many spouses but cheese is strictly illegal. Point is rather than the game telling you if you are a good god or evil god you as a god would be telling your people what is good and what is bad.

I'm serious there's not much to tell. Now you can only smite folks. And I wanted to make it so that followers would be having their own life asking you questions in prayers from time to time and your answers would affect their behavior. So you could create a society where it's fine to have many spouses but cheese is strictly illegal. Point is rather than the game telling you if you are a good god or evil god you as a god would be telling your people what is good and what is bad. I'm afraid I'm gonna have to boycott this game. Cheese must never ever be illegal.

I have a project that's so top secret I don't even know what it is yet (Actually at the minute it's collection of low level game engine bits and bobs threatening to become functional once I get a bit more time to spend on it) What I would really like to investigate is emergent storytelling... Not just behaviours that lead to amusing incidents, but having events that need to be fulfilled, and looking at the world state, and figuring out how to fulfil them. I would eventually like that to feed into something larger, like a sim, or RPG quest system. But right now it's a complete pipe dream since I work 9-5 :-D

I would definitely do that if there is evidence that there is a genuine interest for it. For now I'm waiting to see what happens. I don't want to create too many subforums right of the bat. I find they can clog up the interface. There aren't that many threads on the board in total so these threads about own games can easily be found. If it gets busier and there are multiple threads about this topic then I'll be happy to create a subforum for it. In fact I kinda hope this will happen because I'm very interested in this subject.

I think I realized a long time ago that there are more ideas than there are people and if you have a large project in mind then it'll most likely never get made.
With that in mind, I moved my efforts towards making something small and then building upon it, a little bit at a time. That way, even if you stop, you still have something that seems like a finished project, although small.
I used this method to develop a card game and 18 months on, I have something that I've been playtesting with many people and getting great feedback on.
About 10 months ago, I had to completely redesign the game due to complexity issues. As a result, I have something very different from the original idea but very nice.

Ba'al, the thing about game development, when you are doing it on your own is ... well it's bloody discouraging. Even with all the fancy tools we have novadays! As a game designer I'm supposed to have lot's of ideas ... but I can't work on them all so most of the time I end up rapid prototyping them and then shelving them ... The last thing I worked on is a D&D based time management game... it's sort of lying around now for 3 months. I know what the problem is ... how to progress ... but I need to motivate myself first And then there are all the other distractions Like building a Life Counter for MTG on Android And then there is work. As Stuhacking already said working full time and hobby game development is a bad combination especially for your social life - and when you finally do come home after debugging and tackling issues of a game your boss bought cheap in eastern Europe ( no offence ) you frankly just want to sit down and have a cup of tea ... That was a bit of a rant My apologies! But here is how I feel most of the time after work
