Mosquitoes suck, but Croatian mosquitoes are evil and they suck. The country and people and great but the mosquitoes seem to hunt your ass down.

That's why all these repellents exist. We have this problem too. Lots of swamps and hot summer.

I have been here since April 5th and it is far from summer or hot most of the time but the mosquitoes have been out in full force ever since day one. I don't even remember seeing a mosquitoes when you still needed the heat in Delaware ever. It's kinda twilight zone-ish. LOL.

Well, the reason I mentioned hot summer is because mosquitoes like warm water. And we, especially on Ural, have LOTS of lakes and swamps. Much more that in U.S., where most swamps have been destroyed by industry, and than in Europe, where it's more arid and more hot due to urban environment.

I am currently in Croatia very close to the sea and find it amazing that even when it's cold enough to use blankets and heat that the little buggers come right at you in your face and you end up killing at least ten a day. I guess maybe it has something to do with the sea. Back in Delaware,USA, mosquitoes are nowhere to be seen and the house is only a few hundreds yards away from the Chesapeake Canal which is a large body of water as well. I guess it has to do with wind currents or something. I have been looking about for Citronella here, but I don't speak Croatian and find the stores here much more daunting than the ones in NL since I can read Dutch on a very poor but passable level to get my supplies bought. It took several minutes just to figure out what the laundry detergent versus fabric softner was here too. I am calling it an adventure.

Canal doesn't provide them place to thrive because it moves. They need staying water, that's why swamps are ideal for them. Next time you want an adventure, come to us in Chelyabinsk. Ever heard of radon springs? They are radioactive. Radiation in safe doses invigorates and helps you live longer and stay younger. Even if you are a teenager (it just invigorates you and slows down your apoptosis by killing any weak/wrongly copied cells). Anyway, that's if you use radon springs. In our city you can take a shower and get three times th effect - for free! Chelyabinsk. The city where vigour is measured in rentgen.

We are like 30 meters from the Adriatic Sea, it moves just as much as the Canal does in Delaware. There is no standing water around here, I have been warned about emptying the water from old tires and buckets to stop mosquitoes from laying their eggs. I just have no idea where they are all coming from unless the wind is bringing them from somewhere that does have standing water. I would visit Russia someday once I don't need to keep bouncing back and forth over the Atlantic every 90 days. I think I might skip those springs though. LOL.

On another totally unrelated note......I would almost kill for a diet cherry 7 up, diet root beer, or diet orange soda right now. It is funny the little things you miss when you can't have them.
