Yay! I just rendered my first ever 3D model. Okay granted it looks kinda crappy. I was trying to keep up to speed with the youtube tutorial I was following. Maybe my next model will look better. By the way, I used Blender for this.

I don't even know what that means yet but yes I had to set Blender to cycles renderer.

Sorry, yep, cycles is a pretty new feature in Blender. One thing it let's you do is changed the viewport shading option to 'rendered' and you can move the camera around and it re-renders on the fly. i.e:

Hmmm... my computer is probably not quick enough to use that on the fly feature. The rendering of that teacup took like 10 minutes.

I'm getting incredibly frustrated at the moment with the dimension settings in Blender. Aaaaargggh!

Hey If you are using a blender, can you make me a smoothie?

Hey If you are using a blender, can you make me a smoothie? Remember, don't make fun of the admin. Just kidding. But no smoothies for you. I've been working on a new model. It's incredibly simplistic but I was having a crapload of trouble getting it to render somewhat decently.

So there you have it. I had a lot of trouble with the material settings and the lighting. I found settings online but when I used those I got large white spots on the block caused by the light sources. I'm using a three point lighting system here. The key light is to the left and above the camera at a 45 degree angle. A second somewhat less bright light is to the right and above the camera at a 45 degree angle. A third light source (a spotlight) is positioned behind the object. The first two light sources are circular meshes set as emissions. The rendering setting is cycles render. The material of the object is a mix shader with the first shader set to diffuse and colour blue and the second shader set to glossy with the colour white and a roughness of 0.5. The mix is set to 0.02. If anybody has tips on how this render could potentially be improved I would love to hear them. Not that I actually intent to use this object in this way but I'm trying to learn about the lighting and materials settings.

Here's the same render in grey but with a lower sampling setting. And here's one in red but I changed the cylinder part to have a lot more vertices/faces making it more round. Funnily enough the red one doesn't have the shading on the top of the cylinder. Don't ask me why.

I only modelled with Maya and Max so fahr, but can you "harden" Edges / Edgeloops in Blender too, to influence the shading ? Because I think you would need to do something like that.

To do that, with your object selected, you can enter edit mode (tab), switch to edge select (/) then hold Alt while clicking on an edge to select the edge loop. (You could also click on an edge then in the select menu near the top are options like 'loop' and 'ring' which will select edges joined at the tails (-----), or edges joined by quads (| | | |).
Once you have an edge loop selected, use bevel (Mesh -> Edges -> Bevel) to turn the edge loop into a face loop. You may need to put the segments to 2 to avoid pinching if you are using a subdivision surface modifier).
This version creates new geometry on the mesh, so it's a good idea to be happy with the overall shape before adding detail geometry.
There's another way.
Create your shape and apply a subdivision surface modifier.
When you enter edit mode (tab) and select your edge loop, ensure your objects properties pane is shown by pressing 'n'. Near the top of that you should see a slider called 'mean crease' - this is a property that tells the subdivision modifier how hard you want this edge to be in the smoothed object. 0 is smooth, 1 is fully creased. Play with that value until you are happy with the objects edge. This is sometimes preferable as it doesn't add extra geometry to the object, so you can go back and tweak it.
Hope that helps
