Push notifications are those pop-up messages you get on your phone telling you something about a game or app.

Example: In farmville you get notifications when your crops are ready.
Another example: If you've watched the South Park episode about freemium games, the messages that Stan gets telling him that he hasn't played for a while and that he got "free canadough" are also push notifications.

Usually you can disable them in the iPhone's settings.
