I'm still in Homeworld, playing on Android. I've just unlocked the Ark, but since I'm low on mining resources, I'm trying to decide whether to focus it all on the Ark or take my time and explore the southern areas.
To me, it just looks like boring mountains with lots of rubble. I think I recognise a buried Beacon of Expansion, and to the very south there's a small island completely covered in trees.
Is there anything of interest really? Or am I just looking at wasting time and resources?
I did hear that PC players get more fun things such as a Pit of Doom or stuff like that.

Amused you think the PoD is a fun addition, I think its a waste of time myself though if you get annoyed enough at the developers sacrificing has a certain amount of payback.
In the droid case I'm still stuck on the first island block since I've insufficient chest opening to unlock sea sculpting so I've not yet managed to get the beacons before the land mass on which the ark (after as I recall 3 more beacons) lives. Though with 2200/3000 population and 78/75, 51/50 crops and ore I've expanded as much as I can. Though I did eradicate the astari a couple of weeks ago, gotta love the FoG as a firestarter during festival ability.
Anyway back to your question.
I think we have two beacons south of astari, one very near the ark the other tending back towards the general direction of first landing. So no not much of interest, possibly less so than the block before you got to the ark actually.

I'm curious to find out what the beacons reveal, but right now it just looks like more boring dirt.
I used to be stuck at sea sculpting as well because I spent all my stickers on unnecessary things like "Trees offer more belief".
The way I got past the sea sculpting was when I found the shiny rock seams. I mined them all the way to the temples hidden inside the mountains. The temples managed to give me enough stickers to sea sculpt! Suffice to say after that experience, I'm now hoarding stickers till I really, really need to use them.
And yes, I loved watching the Astari burn like tiny matches. They were flushed out of their castle-y thing and basically became a live bonfire.

Gem mining unlocking is an expensive card too. Beacon wise more boring dirt. We used to have more unlockable land at that point but when we got the ark we lost a couple of expansion points, to err more boring dirt. There are a couple of temples too. One south of that beacon you mentioned the other closer to the ark. I don't think you get to expand as far at that tree island, in any case there is not much of interest left for you in homeworld, and actually aside from more of the same in weyworld - where more of the same means a whole new set of astari, 3 villages as I recall, with a body count of about 1000. They were much more annoying in weyworld than homeworld, since they appear to get all the croppable land which is a massive restriction of usage in weyworld.
In the pc version where I've got around 40 million belief across worlds, and several million of ore and crops too I've very little of interest to do, nothing to unlock in terms of sticker usage, and no expansions left either.

Resources - also surely. Electricity, phone memory, etc.

The Ark it is then. Let us invade Astari and pillage their farms! XD
Though what resources carry over into Weyworld? Do I keep my gems, stickers, belief and ore?

No powers/belief/ore/crops. Gems are 'shared', though on PC the gem menu 1) gets in the way 2) vanishes sometimes when moving between weyworld/homeworld. As I recall builder leashed to ark get auto regenerated very quickly, unless they fixed that - I used half a dozen abodes close to the ark to build it, and since I really struggled to get a higher body count involved in my build I discovered I could repeatedly leash and fill from those same abodes to the ark. I had not noticed that BEFORE I built the ark itself, so the repeat leash option might only have been able to work post building...
Voyages are also shared, or at least where last time voyages were unlocked. By that I mean since you get belief and gems etc from completing voyages when you are new a shiny in weyworld you get better bang for your buck if you start the voyages from weyworld since you have new build requirements i.e. mines/crops/monasteries can only be built on specific land and resources are VERY scarce.
You get to take the followers you assign to build the ark and another (up to 300) you add prior to sailing.

Just waiting to get enough ores before I start building the Ark (Why does a Ark need so much metal anyway? It's gonna sink!)
For the followers I put on the ship, is it the case where if I put 100 builders, 100 farmers and 100 breeders, they'll all arrive into Weyworld in the exact same numbers? Or will it be like the very start of the tutorial where I have only two followers?
If it's a one to one ratio, I'm going to need more farming settlements around the Ark. I doubt I can leash 80 farmers from as far as the starting islands.

The arks ore and wheat content is high because that is all you can take to give you a start in weyworld. It not really used to build it, it's what you take there.

Until 22cans is done bum fiddling with Combat it looks really doubtful if any other content additions will be forthcoming, at least nothing in the future plans they have offered.
