Found an old interview with molyneux. www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-04-11-peter-molyneux-why-i-quit-microsoft-and-why-my-new-game-will-change-the-world
There he talked about "The Movies":
I thought the game was too frantic. There were too many things to think about and do all the time. If we'd just made it a lot simpler, it could have been a lot more successful. If we'd taken out half the features it would have been a far better game.
I remember The Movies, it was one of those many games that had the potential to get great, but never made it. He thinks it wasn't simple enough. My opinion was (as it is with gouds now) they forgot to implement the game. It was a nice video editor program, but it totally lacked gameplay.
The management part of the game was dull and you had not really to do anything, you took some actors and made a movie and the rest worked by itself. Sometimes you had to put decorative items all over the Studio area to make your actors happy - put you never had to think much or plan anything. So for me the game should have to be more complex not simple. Together with the movie editor possibilities it could have been a great game. Especially if the editor would have been implemented better.
In the game it was more useful to do some generic short movies instead of using the editor. So they made it even worse in making it more useful to not use the part of the game they seemed to have invested the most work in. So it wasn't interesting for most of the Gamers anymore, only for a group of people interested in making machinimas. I don't think you had too many things to do - i think it were not enough meaningful things to do, a problem we have with Godus, too.
What do you think? Was the game not simple enough?
I think it's something Peter has a problem with, maybe he is not able to concentrate on complex processes. Wasn't that the same with godus or Black and White, where everything has to be easy and without ui ... Or is it because his biggest wish is to make his games interesting for casual gamers?
