Hi, total newbie here when I squish abodes into a settlement, should I build more abodes in the spaces not taken up by wheat? And how can I get more farmers in a settlement? Thanks

Thanks Yes, repeatedly squishing abodes increases the numbers of specialists I a settlement. However, the bigger the settlement the slower the spawn time for specialists so I suggest placing your farms before next expansion. Also as you say leave plenty of room for abodes around your settlement so you can keep expanding.

It's an imperfect balancing act in terms of squish versus resultant specialists, notwithstanding the delightful popup (on mobile at least) which suggests you supersize (pay) your ability to get more abodes into a squish! By that I mean sometimes you select the half dozen or whatever abodes that are the best fit in terms of placement and body count, and you get 1 specialist not the 5 you expected. Other times, you get more than you expected and in fact more than you can house.
Basically if you assign your current abode occupiers to go somewhere, where they can actually get there or do anything when they do, they do a little skip and twirl into the specialist type when you squish the abodes together.
One school of thought is send them to the rough area of your mine (or field), and complete the squish before they get there. If they start building a house instead you will have additional steps to take/FoG the partial build and hope they transform to miners (farmers) and build a mine (field) there instead, and you may not get the 'free' bonus where you now have 7/5 miners, rather than the 5/5 you'll eventually get (1 at a time for the next day or whatever). I keep expecting them to close this blip but worst case you get the same number of builders to miners you get anyway, best case you get a few extras even if they don't return having returned home from their first trips - unless you build new/larger settlements which they can instantly populate.
I think someone published their findings in earlier iterations of what they got bang for buck as it were.
When you progress to weyworld they add constraints on which types can be built where so I'd suggest getting used to having a reasonable gap between your settlement and their mines or crops. It's very frustating when your builds build a house on that large plot you wanted the crops or ore from, so a good habit to get into.
