I never heard of this guy before Godus. I have always been a casual gamer. I played spent good money on some games like The Sims, and I mean all the extensions, Roller Coaster Tycoon, a few of the Final Fantasy, and basically whatever cool game came out. I also got sucked into the FB games for a few years because all my friends and family were doing it and it was fun in the beginning. I put out some cash on those game for their "in game features". I still have an active subscription with Wow even though I rarely play it and I still jump online daily to do my dailys for Setters Online and recently my awesome gamer BF has introduced me to Civ 4 and I am looking forward to more such games. He did also introduce me to Populous. I played it and I had a great time, I will play it again when the mood hits.
So, anyway, when this Kickstarter came out and my BF was all giddy like a school girl over it, I thought what the fuck. That Populous game was pretty cool and this Kickstarter page is making this game out to be everything you could ever want in a game for a PC God game like Populous. So, I pulled out my purse and put down as much as I could to give him the coolest gift with all these awesome rewards that have been promised along with this pledge. I had no idea what I was walking into.
A few months go by and the forum is up and running. Everyone is so happy and positive about how awesome this game will be because this PM dude is so amazing. I find myself looking up to him without even knowing squat about him from all the adoration he is getting from all these hardcore gamers, many of them are computer code writers, game designers, graphic designers and artists. Most of them are above average intelligence and I am quite impressed. In my mind, if these people think this guy walks on water, he must do so to some extent.
Let's fast forward to today.
I can honestly say I came into this with no negative or positive preconceived notions. What I have come to see is this man, PM, is nobody to look up to or adore. He seems to feels that regardless of what the players feel, they are wrong if he deems so. He also states that a game designer's main job is not to design games but to make money. He tells people if his game causes pain, he does not care. Well, in my case, I took that whole "tester" thing serious and did my best and according to steam I played that game for over 660 hours. My wrist ached for months....and he does not care.
This is like an ice cream salesman that promises if you give me 100 dollars I will make a store that sells both real ice cream and might also make some frozen yogurt but he will never weaken his quality of ice cream because he really does not like frozen yogurt. He gets his money and his store gets built but he signs a contract with a frozen yogurt provider a few weeks later. When his store opens up there is a stall of ice cream flavored frozen yogurt. The ice cream lovers scream that just because you tried to make it seem like ice cream it is still frozen yogurt but he tells them all, he tells them it is just that he is not done yet and the finished product will very much be the ice cream he promised. When the time comes to release the finished product and there is still no ice cream, he tells his backers, what is your problem with frozen yogurt? It is the wave of the future and btw, I don't care if it burns your throat going down, do some throat exercises to fix that or shut up.
If I want ice cream I will buy ice cream and if I want frozen yogurt I will buy that. It is MY choice as a consumer and I neither care not want your opinion about whether or not my preference is acceptable to you as the manufacturer. Just make a product and sell it to those that want that product and if you are asking for money in advance then give me my damn ice cream.
My overall perception of him now, I don't like him and I don't know why you all did so much. Sorry, but he has shown me nothing as a backer but disrespect. He has shown me nothing as a player but disdain for not liking his game. He thinks that he can judge players that put down cash both to help him make his game, the backers, and players that put down cash to continue to pad his pockets because we just want we had said he was going to make.
