I was just cooking some pork with soy sauce, a pinch of ginger and plum wine, and I was too careless in letting the ethanol fly away, putting meat before it vaporizes fully. Now I, my mom and my grandpa got mild ethanol poisoning (a.k.a. being drunk) and it feels shitty.
As I'm slowly getting sober, I write this thread as a means to satisfy my sudden urge to talk, as a warning to myself to be careful with dangerous ingredients onwards and to ask everyone: why the hell are you enjoying this shit? How do you do it?
I feel a special guilt for my grandpa (I feel so sorry I can't face him to apologise). The best of my genes come from him. Remember the cliché line that "everyday workers are the real heroes" that action heroes say to look cooler? Well he is an everyday hero, a labor veteran who was so cool he was featured in local newspaper and they still call him to the factory from time to time for consultations.
Anyway, why are you enjoying being drunk? How do you do it?

I was actually drunk this morning. I nipped two glasses of scotch. I didn't have any problem with the way I felt. Nor do I have any problem with the way I feel when I'm sober. Sometimes it's just nice to drink some scotch and getting drunk is a side effect.
And now I'm gonna drink some more.
By the way, how much alcohol did you put in the pan?

I actually do not enjoy being drunk. A very slight warm buzz is preferable, but even then I don't drink very often. I can imagine you all felt really ill afterwards. But, I think your grandpa would be very forgiving of an honest mistake; cooking is a delicate skill and an art or balance, and sometimes things end up a bit off. I bet he's proud you tried (even if he won't admit it).
Also, I really enjoyed this little excerpt. Thanks for sharing it.

I covered it with a thin layer of sauce. Later I added more wine to balance out too much shoyu (soy sauce). Still, I learned from my mistake quickly enough so only first portions of meat were compromised. But I hated the fact my movemets became less accurate (non-specific nucleus ruber activation, damn it), as well as some weird loss of sensoric ability I still can't describe well. But after i sobered up I simply felt some pain in the head is all. I guess the poisoning was mild enough or my shizophrenia saved me (alcohol resistance is much bigger in schizoids because of higher cerebral tonus).

It sounds like there was a lot of alcohol in it. I don't really experience much of what you describe even after drinking a half a bottle of whisky.

I've had a few drinks that caused some sensory numbness in places like my fingertips, tongue, and lips. Usually it was a high proof grain alcohol like Everclear that has that effect. Tho once it was after a friend dared me to drink some old cooking wine... Which unbeknownst to us fermented a bit beyond its time. If I had drank more than I did i may have ended up in the hospital instead of just being ill and numb for a few hours.

That numbness always exists when you're drunk, gradually increasing the effect until the inhibition closes off all the signals.
BTW, this is one of the reasons you go asleep after drinking too much so easily - you don't have enough signals to keep you awake.
Also, you normally do not notice the hypertension and sensory blockade because you cannot maintain ability to compare your state with your normal sate of conscious mind.
I did notice it because I already knew about it and wasn't drunk enough to lose myself.

Yup. It's not a feeling I am fond of. One reason is because I am one of those people severely aware of how alcohol affects the body, and make mental notes of the effects as they take hold. I am totally conscious of my lack of physical control (slurred speech, stumbling), and dislike having my facilities diminished that much. Then there's the horrible hangover, none of which enjoy or ever look fondly back on. I take great care not to drink to that point anymore. I buy a case if beer and it lasts me at least a couple months, usually longer. Wine goes a little quicker, but we only occasionally have a glass with dinner. Liquor lasts much longer; I bought a bottle of rum four months ago and it's still 3/4 full.

I don't really get a lot of hangovers. There have been occasions when I drank about 3 quarters of a bottle of whisky on an evening and woke up the next morning feeling perfectly fine. The strange thing is you don't have to drink alot to get a hangover. If I drink 2 or 3 glasses of whisky followed by 1 or 2 beers there's a chance I might not feel so great the next morning. So mixing different types of alcoholic drinks appears to be a recipe for hangovers.

I made my grandmother and family drunk when I was a teenager by putting too much alcohol in my grasshopper pie. Mom said I should have cooked the alcohol out before mixing it in, but I never saw it in the book. LOL, It was a running family joke for awhile, no biggie. We all got a bit silly and then drank some coffee and went to bed early.
