Update 22 - 17/05/2014Saturday ScoopNew Reward and Add-on!One of the most requested additions to our rewards is finally official! We are announcing the digital Strategy Guide! Everyone who is in the $40 tier or higher will automatically receive this new reward for free! The digital Strategy Guide is also available as an Add-On for $10 added on top of your current pledge. 80% Funded! What a ride it has been! We entered the last week of the campaign yesterday, breaking into the final fifth. All of you made this possible! The best thing about the campaign thus far is how many more people have joined our once small community. It is fair to say that things exploded! You have already given us so many awesome ideas and suggestions to contemplate and test out. We even conceptualised a few, as you can see from the forums! Expect that to happen quite often after the campaign. Once that first Alpha hits, we are going to be looking for as much feedback as possible. In the meantime, if you haven’t already checked them out, be sure to say hi on our forums at www.theuniversim.com/forums. You can leave suggestions, speculations, and chat about everything there. Also be sure to have a look at our Community Labs update! There will be more to come, we are really excited to see so many people already participating in the first! ThunderclapThe Thunderclap campaign has been an unbelievable success, and it is all because of your help! Over 700 people have supported us, giving the campaign a total social reach of over 300000! That is pretty crazy. Even if only 1% of that decide to help out, the Kickstarter will still get a gigantic boost. We have decided to delay the Thunderclap to Monday to ensure everyone is listening. It is going to be a hectic last few days! Things are looking good everyone! In-Game Object Editor UpdateWe have a small new video of some of the options available to you in the building editor! We announced this feature in a previous update. You can learn more there! Keep on being awesome!

Update 24 - 19/05/2014Planet Discovery and ColonizationHello Ladies and Gentlemen! In today’s update we will be covering more info about the Planet Discovery and Colonization Mechanics. As we revealed on the page, all of the stars you see on the screen are actually colonizable planets! With the right technologies, you can reach any one of them. You will never come across a planet that your species cannot inhabit, but most will require you to spend some time analyzing them and preparing your crew for colonization. Every planet may be habitable, but you will often need to make it that way first. After researching and placing a space telescope on your planet, you will be able to click on distant planets and get some basic information about them. You will be able to view information like the name of the planet (which is randomly generated), or those who backed for $200 or higher will get to name their own planet which will be visible for everyone in final game - pretty great present for your beloved, right ? Do not worry! Everyone can rename the planets after colonization, except for the planets that have been named by the $200 backers. Telescopes will also allow you to see the approximate distance to the new planet and a few details regarding unknown information about the planet. All unknown/mystery information can be revealed by sending a customizable Recon Rover to the planet. After all, you wouldn’t really want to colonize a planet without any valuable resources, would you? It is always up to you, but if you are on the hunt for a juicy resource-filled planet to colonize, it is best to send your rover to check things out first and do a proper analysis before you send your colonization team in. You will be able to customize and upgrade Recon Rovers with various technologies and models. Sure it may take some time to do so, but it is usually worth every second to pack your rover with as much stuff as you want. There will naturally be some protective elements to consider, such as thermal shielding - which is great for both hot and cold environments- and even environmental armour. When visiting mysterious alien planets, you never know what may await your rover in the unknown. You can even install a camera on your rover and drive it remotely on the surface of the planet yourself! We believe that will be really cool experience. There are even things like probe upgrades for scouting terrain and discovering resources. All of these technologies will take time to research and install on your vehicles. This is why it is really important to customize your vehicles properly before sending them on missions, as to avoid losing them to the harsh environments and having to start all over again. Once the Recon Rover has completed its analysis, it will transmit all relevant information back to your home planet. You can then begin preparing your colonization shuttle and colonization team for what comes next. Based on the information you received from the rover, you can begin deciding what you will need to install on your shuttle and what kind of equipment to assign to your team to ensure their safety. You may require thermal protection, oxygen suits for your team, and even additional cargo such as atmosphere generators or thermal regulators. It will cost you your time, resources, and possibly even your population. Wait a second. We have COWS right? Oh yeah, we totally forgot to mention that you can send cows on a one-way trip to alien planets and see what becomes of them. The Cowtivo Space Program is one such initiative you can look into. Remember the Cowtivo Industries Skyscraper? Be prepared to do some pretty funny stuff. They may dominate the new planet and even evolve. When you come around hoping to colonize the planet, you had better be prepared to deal with the new overlords. You will be able to transfer resources from planet to planet in the Space Age. That is what makes the colonization process so important for your civilization. Certain valuable resources are non-replenishable and you will need to discover new planets to maintain your resource levels. The transferral process is therefore crucial to the survival of all civilizations across the stars, including your one and only Mother Planet. Just like other vehicles in the game, you will be able to build and customize Cargo Spaceships and unlock awesome gadgets that will make them even stronger, faster, and possibly even increase their overall capacity. That is all we have for the moment, we hope you guys enjoyed it! Now remember, be responsible with cows! You never know what you may create. Also be sure to keep spreading the word about the game, there are only 4 Days left to get The Universim Kickstarted! As always, our biggest thanks! Your Crytivo Games Crew!Shout-OutsDungeon Dice: GUILDS"Dungeon Dice is an all-dice game of bashing monsters and finding treasure." Over two pounds of custom dice already available and smashing stretch goals! Interested in throwing some dice? The Goonies Bicycle Playing Cards by USPCC"Now you can purchase your very own custom playing cards based on The Goonies movie. Update 25 - 20/05/2014New Reward TiersHello Creators! There are only 3 Days left to achieve our goal and possibly reach some of the stretch goals! Let’s make it happen! We have seen everyone increasing their pledges lately, and wow have you made our jaws drop, so today we would like to present you with some exciting new tiers that will give you a little something extra for your help! Keep in mind that if your pledge is already higher than these new tiers, you will automatically receive them as well! Guard-Satellite Star KeeperIntroducing the latest orbital technology developed by Crytivo Industries, the Guard-Satellite Star Keeper! As you can tell by the name, it will protect your planet (when activated) from certain natural disasters such as asteroids or any other space junk that may be hurtling towards your planet. Be sure to keep it in range of the Epicenter! Oh, and one last thing! It is up to you to decide if you want to use it purely for protective measures, or to cook a few of your misbehaving citizens. We can already hear the sound of it - PZzhhhhzhzhppppsssss. Observatory - Luna 1987Another great technology available for backers at $45 is the Observatory - Luna 1987. With this high-tech building, which will become available right after you step into the Modern Age, you will be able to begin observing distant planets immediately for future preparation. Magic right? Well we here at Crytivo Industries don't believe in magic! With this technological beast, you will be able to discover all of the beauty of alien planets while sitting in a stylish, comfy chair back on Mother Planet. Fully Loaded Discovery RoverThis monster of engineering is available to you from $65 upwards. The Fully Loaded Discovery Rover is an awesome addition to the recon catalogue. It will help you collect important information about the various planets you come across, without spending too much of your valuable time. It comes equipped with high capacity batteries that will allow you to drive it on alien planets for longer. We also installed thermal protection, so no pesky extreme conditions will get in the way of your exploration. And finally, GUNS. Two mini-cannons come pre-installed in front of the body to protect your vehicle against wild animal attacks and other dangers. Get it today! Half of the funding will be used to upgrade Cow Facilities in the Cowtivo Industries Department, or will simply be used to add more villainous, erm, innovative technology! How can I get my hands on this stuff? As we said earlier, if you are at a higher tier you will receive all lower tiers automatically-except for the standalone tiers such as: $35, $55 and $70. Everything else will be included in your rewards. For example: if you are at $30 and you want to get the Guard Satellite, you just simply add $5 to your pledge, $15 for the Satellite, Cowtivo Skyscraper, and Observatory, and so on. If you have any questions, please ask them in the comments below or send us a Private Message. Thank you all!*Please Note: You will be able to construct these technologies in-game without pledging for these tiers, it will just take you some time to research the proper technologies and gather the required resources. Some may even require the discovery of special technologies on alien planets. The items listed in the tiers above will be designed with an exclusive look for Kickstarter backers and will be different from what you can build in the game. These new tiers follow the same principle as the previously announced in-game tiers where all models will undergo a visual overhaul to give backers a new look and will be automatically unlocked upon reaching the appropriate era. They are still unlockable in-game!

Update 26 - 21/05/2014WE ARE FUNDED!Wow!This is so incredibly surreal, you guys made it happen! The goal has been reached! It sounds almost crazy saying that, but here we are. All of us are staring at the screen right now with our collective jaws strewn across the floor. These last few days have been nothing short of amazing! The amount of support, page sharing, and generally incredible people we have seen from the very beginning has shown us how great our community has become. We cannot begin to thank you guys for everything you have done. Each and every one of you have helped us immensely, no matter how small your support. How does it feel to have succeeded everyone? On our side, we feel like we are floating on a cloud. This is where the hard work begins for us. You have all done your part, in fact most of you went above and beyond the call! For that we cannot do any less but make the best darn planet management god-game the world has ever seen! But we want you all to be with us every step of the way! From here on out, we are building this game together. That means you better stay in contact! The forums are a great place to do that at www.theuniversim.com/forums. We are going to set up the Private Backer Forums soon and ensure that everyone receives the correct badges. All gameplay stuff in regards to Community Labs and such will be open to all forum users though as to not exclude any of you fantastic people from having your say. Where do we go from here? The first Alpha! The Prototype build, which we discussed in Update 17, will be available within a month or so from now once we polish it up a bit. That will offer a small teaser of what is to come. We want to be able to show you guys the stuff you really want to see, so expect a couple of development videos to go up within a few months. Until that time, we will keep you all updated on what is happening. There are definitely going to be a few surprises! So keep that in mind if we are ever a little quiet about some or other aspect. You guys have already done so much, but should we try and shoot for a few of those stretch goals? The last 2 days are coming up, we may even see many more faces springing up to help out. Let us know how you are feeling down below in the comments! I think I need a good glass of Ice Tea for the nerves. You know we can never thank you all enough, but really and truly THANK YOU!

Update 28 - 22/05/201448 Hours LeftHello everyone! We just recently crossed the funding line and have about 48 hours left to reach some of the stretch goals! To everyone on the ropes, it is your last chance to finally join the community or up your pledge and help us unlock some more exciting stuff. Every cent will be poured directly into The Universim and will help us implement deeper gameplay and polish it all a lot faster. Let’s give it one final push, share The Universim with your friends and tell them that they don't have much time left. Tomorrow we will release a massive FAQ update where we will answer some of the most important questions asked by the community. Let’s see if we can unlock the Dinosaur Era which will be filled with massive prehistoric beasts, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and an awesome new soundtrack specifically made for the era. There are over 10,000 of us now, we can do anything! If we reach the Dinosaur Era Goal, we will do our best to implement the Planet Editor at some point during development. Keep in mind that the Planet Editor is very different from the $3,000 Pledge as at this tier we will design a completely unique planet with custom environmental models, conditions, secrets, and effects. Our composer will also compose a special track for your planet to help express the mood you are going for. These planets will shine brightly in the sky and will be easily discoverable for everyone in the Space Age. Click to Tweet about The UniversimOnce again, thank you very much everyone! We finally made it and can begin adding even more awesome stuff into the game with your help!

Update 30 - 23/05/2014Merging Stretch GoalsHello Everyone! After a lot of discussion with our development team, we have some very exciting news to share with you. We are merging the Planet Editor Toolset with The Universim Live News System stretch goal! They will both be unlocked if we reach the $450,000 Goal. We realise that there isn’t much time left, but we decided to go ahead with this plan and give you a new incentive. Somewhere down the road, we want to link the planet editor to the Steam Workshop and allow you to customize planets and share them with your friends and the community. Just a reminder, the planet editor is not the same thing as what you will get from the $3000 tier. These planets will be custom built by us with exclusive tracks and unique characteristics. Backers at this level will work alongside our designers to build their planet from scratch. As of right now, including PayPal, only $90000 is required to unlock this goal! Thank you ALL!

Update 32 - 23/05/2014FAQ Roundup! There is a little under 24 hours left before the end of campaign! Some of the awesome stretch goals have been reached and there is still the opportunity to unlock even more. We have already taken a step forward and merged the Planet Editor Toolset with The Universim Live News System, so now both will be unlocked by reaching $450,000. Today we are taking a look at some of the most common questions we received and answering them all here. When is the Alpha and Beta going to be released? We plan to release the first Alpha Build by the end of this year, and the beta will follow a few months after that. Take a look at the timeline below for more detailed information. Can’t wait and want to get your hands on our prototype? Add it on to your rewards for an additional $15, it even includes a few samples from our soundtrack. Steam or DRM-free?How does both sound?! We have clarified before that all backers will receive both a Steam key and the DRM-free version to download from our site, but we wanted to ensure that everyone knows about this! I backed the project via PayPal, will I get the same rewards?Yes! You will get exactly the same rewards as those who backed via Kickstarter/Amazon. There are no limitations for you. You can also increase your pledges by sending a second transaction with the difference between your current pledge and your newly chosen tier/add-on. We will check with you after the campaign to see what you have selected. I backed via PayPal and didn’t receive a confirmation. I am also not listed as a Kickstarter Backer. What’s going on?We have to process all PayPal transactions manually and add you guys into our mailing list. We have a lot of PayPal backers, over $10,000 in pledges via PayPal, and we are doing our best to process everything as soon as possible and send you the notifications. Kickstarter unfortunately does not have official PayPal support, so we cannot tie your account to the campaign itself here. Will The Universim be available on other digital distributors besides Steam and your website? We will do our best to deliver The Universim via as many platforms as possible. We will try to partner with GOG, Humble Bundle and other Stores. Will I get all lower pledge rewards if I am in a higher tier?Yes, you will get all rewards from the tiers that are lower than yours, except for standalone tiers such as $35(Couple’s combo), $55(Double Deal) and $70. If your pledge level is higher than all new tiers (let’s put link to new tiers), you will get them automatically. How can I increase my tier? You can increase your tier by simply adding the difference between your existing tier and your newly chosen tier. For example: if you are at $15 tier and would like to get access to the alpha and beta, you just will need to add $15 extra and select the $30 tier. The same thing applies with add-ons, if you are at the $20 tier and want to add a T-shirt; you can add $35 (+ $10 shipping internationally) so your total pledge amount will be $55/$65. At the end of campaign, you will receive a survey where you can specify what rewards you chose. When will I receive my goodies? We will start sending rewards as soon as they are ready. You can expect T-Shirts, USB Drives, Planet Sculptures, Posters, and so on to be delivered within a few months following the campaign. All game related stuff will naturally be sent at launch. When the Kickstarter concludes, where is the best place to track all of the new game updates?Following the conclusion of the Kickstarter campaign, we will be entirely focused on game development. We have prepared our basements to last the year with canned food, crisps, caffeinated beverages, and a couple of plastic mannequins for company. We will be working hard on the game from now on to deliver the best experience possible. If you would like to stay updated, see new screenshots and videos from the development process, and get all of the latest news, we recommend you: Follow us on TwitterLike our page on FacebookRegister on our ForumsSubscribe to our SubredditSubscribe to our YouTube ChannelWe will of course post updates here as well, but only the most substantial ones. Thanks guys! You’re the best!

Update 33 - 24/05/2014SUCCESS!We made it!Now this was an adventure! Starting out last year we didn’t know how far we would get. Putting the project up here on Kickstarter was a giant leap. We knew that we had something special, a game that absolutely needed to be made. You have all helped confirm that! Hitting the goal absolutely blew our minds, but the fact that you guys got it up past $400000 ( YES DINOSAURS CONFIRMED!) is unbelievable!! Now the long road begins! But with you guys by our side every step of the way, we shouldn’t stray from making the best darn god game ever. Work has already begun on the first playable Alpha. We want to try and include as many features as possible, but it is definitely going to be an iterative process. We are going to need your feedback to make sure everything is perfect! So be sure to join us on our forums at www.theuniversim.com/forums in order to stay in touch with us and the community. There will be regular posts about different features that you need to vote on in the Community Labs, developer discussions, and even a suggestion/idea section for you to be creative and help add even more exciting things to the game! The best thing of all is leaving all of this with so many fantastic new people! We look forward to getting to know as many of you as possible! This is the start of something great, and we’re just so glad you are going to be here to share in all of the exciting times ahead. We couldn’t have done any of it without your help. Every moment we saw so many of you helping out in incredible ways, and for that we cannot thank you enough! It is time for us to bunker down and get to work! Onwards dear Friends!

Update 34 - 28/05/2014To be continued!Greetings Everyone! The celebrations have only just about started to die down...oh no wait someone just brought in a karaoke machine, guess not. The dinosaur cake will have to keep us going until morning. Anyway! We discussed the future of the project throughout the campaign, preparing for whatever the outcome may have been. You guys blasted through our expectations, though! However, the mountain of messages from people who wanted to back after the campaign was gigantic, forcing us to really consider doing it. After discussing things with our web developer and taking a look at a number of options, we decided to go ahead with the plan. This is the best way for us to achieve those stretch-goals early on and hire even more people to develop the game faster. The new pricing will be a good bit higher (but still incredibly fair for the rewards offered) than that featured here on Kickstarter, just as we promised. You will all be receiving the numerous benefits that come with being a Kickstarter backer! After all, we would be nothing without our fantastic founding community. This additional funding will only make the game even better! We have a merchandise store that will be going up sometime soon for everyone to browse and purchase any physical add-ons that they may have missed during the campaign (T-Shirts, Posters, Figurines, USB’s, boxed copies, and so on). Everything counts towards the remaining stretch-goals! We got dinosaurs and multi-language support, now we are heading for the Live News System and Planet Editor! Isn’t that epic? Time to really make this the best game that it can possibly be! Be sure to share the new page with your communities and see if there are any would-be gods still floating around in orbit. You can see the new funding page at: www.TheUniversim.comWe are also currently working on surveys and implementing a system that will be able to capture everyone’s exact reward choices and make it easier for us to organise everything. Expect to receive a few emails from BackerKit - backer management platform, in a few days where you can specify your Kickstarter rewards and details. Click to tweet this news.Thank you!

Update 35 - 31/05/2014Forum RegistrationDear BackersOver the last week, we have been setting a lot of things in motion for the development process and future prospects. You have already seen our newly-added pre-order area for non-Kickstarter backers to start backing the project on our site, but there is a lot more still to come. Right now, we are beginning to roll out badges and backer rewards on the forums. It may be a little more time before everything is ready to go, but we want to ask that if you are going to register on the forums then please do so using the same email address as your Kickstarter account. This allows us to cross-reference and link your rewards properly. Those who have already created forum accounts with email addresses that are different from their Kickstarter ones can contact us when we start adding badges. We will let you know when! We hope to see all of you with the shiny new badges soon. Another thing that we need to tell you guys about is that you can expect surveys to come in about 2 weeks which will allow you to nail down exactly what you ordered. We cannot send them just yet as we are waiting for all of the Amazon payment problems to be sorted out first. All PayPal backers will also receive surveys via email, but we may need to approach that a little differently so we will keep you updated on how it will work out. Thanks everyone!

Update 36 - 20/06/2014Status UpdateHello Everyone! It has been a couple of weeks since the end of the campaign and things have been progressing quite nicely! We should be receiving the Kickstarter money from Amazon sometime soon and then we can begin rolling out the Backerkit surveys and forum badges. Pretty much everything is ready on that side, perhaps a few final tweaks are needed here and there before launch. We hope it will all go super smoothly, but we will post a way to contact us should something go wrong with your particular pledge. When the surveys are ready, we will post some extra info in an update here that should help get your order nailed down. For example: if you paid extra for a certain add-on, you will notice that you have additional money when beginning the survey. This is for your add-ons. All add-ons can be selected and added to your order in a separate tab which is pretty convenient. It will then subtract the add-on prices from your total extra amount. If you paid for shipping, this amount will be subtracted at the very end so be sure to leave $10 in your backer wallet for this purpose. Backerkit allows you to purchase additional add-ons through them by using their special payment system, but we are not really supporting that as they take a large percentage of the amount. We will offer all add-ons again in our official store when it goes live later on this year (like T-Shirts, physical special editions, artbooks, etc). Microsoft and ID@XboxAlex spoke with representatives from ID@Xbox last week (they are fantastic people!) and learned a lot about the kind of support they offer (such as devkits). They really want to see the game make its way onto Xbox. We were considering doing a port to consoles, but only after the PC versions were completed. That is still very much the case! The way the game works now will remain as is (in terms of PC-specific features) and we will not strip anything out or streamline gameplay. If we do receive enough support, i.e. well in excess of our goal, we might consider hiring an additional team to begin reworking the PC content for consoles before launch depending on your feedback. We would like to hear your thoughts on possible current-gen console ports in the comments below. Nothing is being designed with consoles in mind at the moment and we plan to stay that way, so fret not fellow PC gamers! There is only about a 25% chance (just to throw in a random value) of a console port right now, we are far too busy making the PC versions as awesome as possible. How would the game work on console, though?Due to the nature of the game focusing on dynamic gameplay and AI, direct contact with your people (as in clicking on them and sending them to do tasks) is not going to be supported (although, we aren’t ruling it out depending on what you think). This removes the need for micromanagement on ground-level and thus allows most features to be relatively easy to use on a controller. However, things like creator abilities (such as clicking on and moving a raincloud and other environmental interactions) can be a little trickier to do. We have thought of a few ways to work around that, such as having a specific button for creator abilities followed by you selecting a nearby interactive object (through somewhat of an object highlighting system) and then moving it/controlling it as you wish. You would move around the planet using the analog sticks (left to rotate planet, right to zoom in and out for example), so that isn’t too much of a problem with an option to turn on and off a controllable ‘cursor’ for selecting particular objects/buildings that catch your attention in current view. All menus, such as research, colonization, and construction, can be reworked for the controller once they are finalized on PC. And so the list goes on. However, the definitive experience will always remain the PC in terms of usability, fidelity, and moddability. That pretty much sums up the news on that side, so please share your thoughts. I hope this shows that everything is being developed on PC first, regardless of console plans. Don’t worry about that! Most of us are PC gamers, so we know how much it hurts to be screwed over on launch day due to multi-platform. Particularly in recent days (you know what I’m talking about). We will do our best to keep you updated, but we have pretty awesome things happening all the time at the moment. We would actually end up spamming you to death if we kept putting it up here. It is also REALLY hard to keep track of feedback here, so be sure to visit our forums! We are pretty much always active over there and new things are pouring into the forums each day. Things like design decisions and feedback requests can be found regularly. You can participate in all of them. Come join us! We have a heated pool, a great community, beanbag chairs, and cupcakes! The best news of all is that at least one of those things are true! Our social networks like Twitter and Facebook are also great, just saying. If we don’t update for extended periods, rest assured that it is due to us being focused on development. Thanks!

Update 37 - 15/07/2014Backerkit AnnouncementHello Creators,Today we have wonderful news! We have finally completed the migration process from Kickstarter to BackerKit after a few kinks prevented us from doing so for a while. BackerKit is a third-party online tool that will help us, and you, to manage your reward tiers. Unfortunately, Kickstarter does not provide sufficient tools to allow us to gather all of the needed information for certain pledge tiers. You can expect to answer a few very important questions (there is an option to edit most of them afterwards, but please double check that you answered each thing correctly according to what you want). You can expect an email from Backerkit to appear in your inbox (which is tied to your Kickstarter email) within the next day or two, so please check your spam folders if nothing comes through, or simply visit www.theuniversim.backerkit.com. When you open the Backerkit survey for the first time, it will begin with the questions for the various reward tiers. If you are a high-level backer, you can expect quite a few questions so be sure to go through it when you have the time. The first question will ask you to provide the name you wish to use on our Backer Wall and in the game’s credits. There is an option to remain incognito for those of you who wish to remain mysterious and aloof. A few people indicated interest in this particular option, so we just assumed they were secret service agents and obliged. The next will request the email address that you are using on the forums. We will use this address down the road if we need to contact you regarding additional reward info or any concerns about your pledge. There is an incognito option here as well, but this is mainly for low-level backers who do not wish to receive the badges or wish to remain anonymous. If you are a high-level backer, do not select the incognito option. We will be using this email address to contact you personally about the different reward designs and info. I posted this in the previous update, but it still applies in case you missed it (or maybe you forgot): If you paid extra for a certain add-on, you will notice that you have additional money when beginning the survey. This is for your add-ons. All add-ons can be selected and added to your order in a separate tab, which is pretty convenient. Unfortunately you cannot increase your pledge directly on Backerkit as we had to disable that feature for the reasons stated above. If you have any questions, please check our public forum section here to see if anyone had a similar problem/question before submitting an email to us.If you have any problems or are receiving any unsolved errors, please email us at backers@theuniversim.com and we will do our best to sort it out promptly. Please keep in mind that there are over 12000 awesome people that may be contacting us as well, so we apologise in advance if we take a while to reply. We don't expect there to be any issues, but something this big can go wrong for the most ridiculous reasons. As soon as we receive all of the information from you, we will begin ordering the goodies for confirmed orders and prepare it for launch. The new prototype is almost ready and keys and download links will go out (in a separate email) for those who purchased the add-on after everyone’s info is collected. In regards to Forum Badges: After all relevant information is collected via Backerkit, we will provide further instructions on how you can receive your badge. Wear it proudly, backers! You helped make the game a reality. Future members will certainly eye them jealously. Once again, thank you for your awesomeness! Our team is working non-stop on The Universim and we are fully focused on development. We are adding exciting new features and polishing our Game Design Concepts. There is some very exciting stuff happening right now and we are looking forward to showing you all when we reach the next milestone. Update 38 - 13/11/2014November Update!Greetings citizens! The Crytivo team has been working hard since the successful completion of our Kickstarter campaign back in May and would now like to take this opportunity to address you, the community, with an update on The Universim. Firstly, we would like to thank all of you for your continued support and the fantastic posts on our forums and social media outlets. It’s just amazing to read everything you have to say. If you’re interested in reaching out to us, you can find us on: Also be sure to head over to our forums! For those waiting to receive their pledge rewards, they’re almost ready and coming hot off the presses. We’re finalizing the last of the rewards, the t-shirts, and will soon have them at the warehouse to be sent out. It took a bit of time as we had to make sure we were able to order the best quality gear for our backers. You won’t believe how tricky that can be, sheesh. Lastly, we posted an update regarding issues with PayPal and the funding recently. We are continuing to work with PayPal regarding this issue and would like to request that any future pledges are made directly on our website! Now, let’s talk about the game! PROMETHEUS ENGINE - WHAT CAN IT DO?As you know, The Universim is a game about building up a civilization, exploring the boundaries of space, and surviving on the many planets you discover throughout the universe. To do this, we require an engine, which we’ve dubbed Prometheus, to handle the algorithms for generating planets and their composition. Preparing and designing Prometheus has been our main focus recently, seeing as it is a crucial milestone that will allow us to create resources, biomes, weather, and much more with ease and then combine all of that into generating new and unique planets for your civilization to discover. In other words, dynamic planets are awesome and we’re implementing them ASAP. Currently, Prometheus is able to generate basic unique planets by forming a random planet mesh (hills, water, etc.) and layering it with biomes, which determines how world objects are distributed based on their own rules; for example, a palm tree would be found in a desert biome and not the forest. Right now we base all our biomes and objects off Earth-like environments, but this system will essentially allow us to create whatever we want. Feel free to share some suggestions with us! WeatherWeather is another major aspect of any planet that is under construction by a dedicated developer. Right now, Prometheus can handle basic weather such as wind, clouds, and rain. We plan on making this system dynamic to allow us to create different types of weather (acid rain, anyone?) that spawn based on conditions such as temperature and biome composition. This means that you might find a few surprises when you first step onto the surface of a new planet … you better be prepared! I know we keep saying that, but darnit virtual people’s lives are at stake here! Prometheus is also responsible for controlling character objects in real time pathfinding, such as allowing workers to navigate the landscape in search for resources or animals, as well as aliens (and other beasties) to stalk those workers as prey. Here’s what 200 lumberjacks look like. PROMETHEUS ENGINE - WHAT’S NEXT?Although there is still much more to be done, Prometheus is in a solid enough state now to allow us to refocus our efforts on implementing gameplay mechanics. We will, however, continue to polish Prometheus and currently have some developers working on finalizing the weather system. GAMEPLAYAfter releasing the prototype to the community, we essentially had to rework the foundations of the game since the prototype was a focus on visuals and atmosphere rather than gameplay. Since then, we have been working on implementing mechanics that will be available with the alpha at a later date. We do this by designing the first gameplay experience that we want players to go through, which involves starting a new civilization in the Stone Age. To sum up what mechanics are currently implemented: - Starting the game, we generate a new planet called Mother Planet. This is a default planet type that will be used at the start of the game in order to familiarize the player with the mechanics and is comparable to Earth.
- You can choose where to place an epicenter for your starting civilization, and doing so will spawn two workers.
- Workers are assigned jobs through the epicenter, which are prioritized by default but can be tweaked by the player. We have completed a large chunk behind the job logic, and currently they focus on gathering resources and maintaining worker’s health.
- We also have a basic model editor implemented which we will use to allow players to customize and paint models.
Right now, our developers are completing their current milestone that will polish the first gameplay elements, which include the job system and worker AI. This will pave the way for us to begin adding new content, unique buildings, and behavior. GAMEPLAY - NEXT MILESTONEOur design team has planned the next milestone, which will focus on the population fluctuation of an epicenter, and can be summarized as: - Months will be used to track temperature change and create seasons on the planet. They will also be important time points where epicenters will trigger things like changes in population growth.
- Population growth will be based on a variety of factors, but for this milestone we will focus simply on food consumption; if there is not enough food to feed the population at the end of each month, people will begin to die.
- As population increases, houses will be constructed. Construction will allow workers to gather resources from local warehouses and will allow us to create the foundations for adding all building types.
- We aim to create two key buildings: farms and eateries. Key buildings are special, functional buildings that the player will be able to place on behalf of the epicenter. Eventually, we will allow epicenters to be influenced to do certain tasks, such as construction, and they may or may not listen!
Farms will allow workers to grow crops and store them at nearby warehouses.Eateries will allow workers to satisfy their hunger needs.- Worker statistics will be polished and include their hunger, stamina, and health. As they complete jobs assigned by the epicenter, they will be required to rest and eat or risk losing health and eventually dying. Players will be able to view the ID card of any worker to see how they’re doing.
- As certain population milestones are reached, workers will find a mate and … well, you know what happens next. But most importantly, player’s will be able to expand their workforce!
ARTWORKThe idea of creating procedural environments with many objects on a sphere proved to be a challenge from the technical side of art. Simply put, it does not allow us to use conventional approaches for many things, thus special optimization features and shaders are specifically created for Prometheus. Our 3D models continue to evolve as we iterate on our visual style to find the perfect balance between visual fidelity and performance. To help understand our visual style, as well as assist in visualizing the design of features, we create concept art for nearly everything. Here are some of our latest concepts with a little explanation of their purpose: Our animal models have undergone an overhaul, adding more polygons and shaping them to be a bit more lifelike than before. Epicenters are marked with some monumental object and this is a concept of what a starting epicenter might look like in the Stone Age. Whenever an epicenter is placed, it will come with a mini warehouse, called a stockpile. This is where your workers will temporarily store gathered resources and where they will also have to retrieve resources to be used in construction or supplying other key buildings. Eventually, warehouses can be built and placed closer to heavy resource areas. Towers are key buildings that epicenters can use to defend their borders from danger. These will require a guard type worker to operate and be responsible for spotting any distant workers in trouble. Farms are another important key building that will allow epicenters to grow their own food. Like nearly all key buildings, they will be upgradable to increase certain aspects about them. Workers can take on any job that the epicenter requires of them, and each job will change the look of that worker. Over time, workers will also become hungry and be required to eat. The best option is to seek out an available eatery, a key building that will satisfy a worker’s hunger for much longer than if that worker had to resort to scavenge for food. GOING FORWARDWe know the question a lot of people are asking is, “When will the alpha be available?” Firstly, we would like to continue being an independent team of passionate developers who can take the time to develop the game that we all will love without having to put limits on our creativity due to time. Because of this, and despite receiving quite a few offers from private investors and big publishers, we have declined more than 2.5 million dollars of investments due to unappealing contracts. Overall, our development process has been moving slower than we had expected, mainly because we’re implementing the features the way we envisioned and in a way we hope you will enjoy. However, the process has been very strong and healthy as we continue to pour our love and effort into The Universim and continue to bring on more members to the team; recently we have welcomed two more 3D artists! We also hope to be attending various game conventions in the new year so perhaps we will even get to meet some of you in person! We know you can't wait to get your hands on the Alpha build and we will to do our best to deliver it to you as soon as we can. But since this is our first game as a team, we want to ensure that we deliver the best quality experience to you guys, so please allow us to take the time to build the best planet management game ever. In order to make the waiting process a little less stressful, we have decided to share some of our game design documents with you! Our game designers are currently organising a few, and we will share the links with you pretty soon. We want you to be a part of the development process, so please leave comments and suggestions for new features that you want to see implemented. Thank you again for your awesome support! We will continue to work on the game every day, or for some of us, every night, and hope that you will enjoy this crazy ride with us. So far The Universim community has been very supportive and kind, which has motivated us tremendously! Please follow us on our social channels for smaller day-to-day updates and join discussions on the forums! We hope to give you the opportunity to try what we’ve been working on soon via the alpha version of the game, so stay tuned for more updates!

Update 39 - 14/02/2015February UpdateGreetings citizens!Once again we would like to share with you a little bit about what has been happening around The Universim since starting the new year. At the start of 2015, we’ve grown our team quite a bit and would like to introduce: Developers: George, Daniel Artists: Saxon , Mel, Guille, Bradley, Sebastian With all these new people, progress has really sped up. We have been focusing on our continual polishing of Prometheus as well as working on the logic behind how an epicenter visually grows. Our artists have also been hard at work updating our existing models and beginning to introduce both the UI and animations. We’ve already shared some of these changes on social media and are planning to do so regularly, so be sure to follow us. We’ve also started a new Twitch channel and have begun streaming some of our work and chatting with the community. Be sure to subscribe to get informed about any upcoming streams we’ll be doing, here’s a look at the results of the latest stream with Saxon: Lastly, we were recently approached by Deck 13 Interactive and had a great chat with them. They are interested in helping out indie developers on projects and we talked about the possibility of getting their experience in The Universim. Nothing has been decided yet, and we’re discussing internally, but we will let you know if anything major happens. In this update, we will be focusing on the worker behaviors that we’re both working on and have planned down the pipe. Please note that this is all work in progress and features may change later on. As you know by now, workers will be the workforce of your civilization and accomplish tasks based on the epicenter needs. Workers are assigned to specific roles, each with their part to play: Workers can be selected and will come with a handy ID card that gives a brief summary: Click to enlargeSurvival StatsHealth is the workers lifeline. If this reaches zero, the worker will die! Hunger will drain over time and will affect the worker’s overall mood and productivity. It’s important that workers feed themselves at the epicenter to maintain their health. Stamina will deplete as the worker completes tasks - more so if the task is tough. This stat will affect the worker’s movement and combat speed and workers will need to rest to maintain their energy. Combat StatsThe combat system hasn’t yet been finalized, so these stats are currently in conceptual design. While our goal is to not make The Universim into a combat, real time strategy game, combat will still play an important role. When a worker is created and in their adulthood, they will generate some base combat stats. These stats will change, however, based on modifiers from their current job role. For example, a Guard will have more courage than a mere Farmer. PerceptionWorkers, and any creature, will have a persistent field of perception that will allow them to “see” others around them. This will allow workers to spot threats and decide whether to engage or flee. CourageThe willingness to engage in combat is based on the courage of both parties. This can be combined with nearby friendly units to raise the collective courage enough to take on even the scariest of foes. StrengthSimply put, will determine the amount of damage the worker does. DefenseOpposite of strength, will help reduce the amount of damage taken. SpeedDetermines both how often the unit will attack, and how likely they will avoid incoming damage. The worker’s stamina will effect this stat. Most of the time, worker’s will be focused on their assigned roles in the epicenter. To help control where the focus of the workforce is placed, players will be able to open up an epicenter’s priority panel: Using a system of sliders, players can assign basic workers to high level roles to keep the epicenter in motion. However, more important and unique roles will be assigned through other means which we will talk about in a later update. What’s important to note is the workers productivity portion. Here, the epicenter can be told how hard the workers should work. Will workers be forced to work longer before resting and eating or will they be able to relax more often? But what is a workforce without more workers? As epicenters grow in population, workers will come together and … well, mate. https://vine.co/v/OPTdj15abjIIn the future, we would like to implement a family system, where workers will share last names, have spouses and where children will inherit the statistics of their parents. Eventually, if workers survive long enough,, they will die from old age. We aim to allow players to create the key building cemetery which will allow workers (and families) to bury the deceased and mourn for them. Bodies left to rot might carry diseases so it will be important to have a few cemeteries around. Thank you for joining us in this latest update. We have recently completeled our second milestone and had a successful build review of where we’re at. In the near future, we plan to share a milestone update with the community so you can see what we have planned next! We would like to leave you with a teaser of our newest theme song for The Universim:soundcloud.com/theuniversim/the-universim-theme-song-teaser
