I am cleaning my harddisc and i found a forum post from the old 22cans backer forum. It was made on 07 June 2013. It's a little rant from someone who knows the difference between an alpha and a game dumped down for mobile. I remember that i took the screenshot because i had read postings like that more than once at this time (they need time, you know nothing about gamedevelopment, shut up everything will be fine ...).
So here is the post. Do you think he was right?

He was right and he was wrong. 22cans didn't fail because of what the game was then, they failed because they didn't know back then what the game should be today. Now they have a new CEO and a refreshed if much smaller team. It is for them to figure out what godus is now. It's very late in the piece and it's so much harder to do this now than it would have been back then. If anything godus represents the failure of starting work building something you cannot describe, whatever the July 2013 version looked like (I never saw it) peter and Jack should have challenged themselves more before committing their vision to code.

I would say the game has not changed since 2013. It has the same problems in it's core mechanics it had in 2013 (that was before the rework from ground up). They had a shaky grounding in 2013, reworked it to a much more shaky grounding and since 2013 they tell us that they will build the Burj Khalifa on it. And now they have a new CEO and a refreshed if much smaller team and they go on building on this shaky grounding on and on.
Of course did they fail because of what the game was then. They failed because they started to build a grounding never able to hold a Burj Khalifa but perfectly prepared to hold their mobile f2p app. And that was what we said in June 2013 and people came and said - fuck off you stupid people not able to see that it's an alpha and it will be great one day. And there came other people when SEA came, and after the rework, and in January, and on mondays, tuesdays, wendsdays and even on sundays and said the same.
And now we have the same shaky grounding they build a combat system on that won't change anything of this grounding. And even if they will have 10 new CEO that won't change anything as long as they don't scrap the grounding and start building the game from ground up ... which will never happen because there is too much money involved (and that's what the CEO has to look for, not the creative part). Yes, you can wave your hands and say hello Simon and think everything will be great, but that will never happen. And if anyone wants to make a post in which he writes that it's total Bullshit, shut up, everything will be great - i will be happy, i will take my screenshot and save it to my harddisk right beside the one i had posted up above there and in 20 years when they are at 60% completion i will take it come back to this forum (which is called the "embittered old gamer forum" then) and post it to a new thread. But i am sure that those people will have left years ago and will never read this post i make. And i bet someone will come and say "hey shut up it's only CEO 53 now and he is here since two days so stop your negative posts and let them do their work and everything will be great one day". And then i will go to my holodeck and play "GodSim 25" without pink bubbles and gems.
Was he right? No, he was not right. All he wanted to say in his two liner gone wild was "give them a break" and "give them a chance" but they had their second, third, twentieth ... chance and they don't stop building on this shaky groundig we said will never be able to hold the game you promised (or even a quarter of what was promised) two years ago. He was wrong. And he called us shitheads and digbags and never got banned from their own Forum and now they are banning people on steam forums for telling the truth. Yes the new CEO will be the savior ... i am sure. NO I DO NOT BELIVE IT, even when he brings Garfunkel, too.

They might have a point...that the game is still an Alpha, as it is hardly feature complete or even has all of the core features required to better qualify it as in an actual Beta phase of a software release life cycle.
Alpha is to create the features and to catch major bugs in the core of the title, Beta is to refine the product before release. Godus is still missing quite a few major chunks, what is there is a flimsy mess, while 22cans basically explains for those dev plans: "Combat, Multiplayer...then we expect people to believe that we have no clue of what we're doing."
That is, unless you're going by a "suck-it-and-see iterative development" that is really someone just redoing work in hopes of seeing some success without a clear destination in mind.
People are really starting to become (further) convinced that 22cans have no clue of what they're doing, but hey...have you played the Combat Opt-In yet?
Then again, 1.0 is usually the version of a title first published, so...what version is Godus up to now?
2.something and 53% done = 22cans are trying to bullshit the PC audience about the state of the game or simply don't know better.
(My vote is bullshitting, because the mobile version is currently 0.0.27.)

I think the Alplha/Beta/tTech demo argument is a red herring. It does speak to the distortion of reality that has gone on at 22cans and their spin which I believe did stop when they were in private in the office. I don't think it helps you be successful if you are deceiving yourself.
However, the primary reason I believe GODUS is in the state it's in is a lack of planning and direction. After all "a goal without a plan is just a wish".
