I'm going to be blunt here for a change: **snip** While I definitely understand where you're coming from here. I think (and thats just my opinion on this) 22cans kinda went too far on this. Rather than being cautious in what to reveal and what to keep silent, the decision made was to keep pretty much EVERYTHING silent. Combined with a few reveals that ended up falling apart or not coming together as intended, the overall effect was a rather underwhelming whole. Follow that up with the pretty massive gap between expectations and vision/design which was partially (if not entirely) caused by the shift in focus towards mobile. And you end up with the development cycle of the past year. The way I see it, such a development procedure is like walking a tightrope. But instead of trying to balance and walk the line - the decision was to hide behind a wall and hope for the best.

Raspofabs, when I exited godus I got a requester telling me that the s3e was no longer working. I didn't have to go to taskmanager to end a process though. So good job, I guess.

Question for George - now that the update is out, care to finally elaborate on 'reasons'? Might be a few days. Similar to other corporations, Studios sometimes release info/updates they deem possibly.. upsetting will do so on Fridays (or the end of the work week depending on the country). There are a few concrete reasons for doing so. Some of which include: Allowing the public facing team a chance to recharge before they wade into the sea of frothing angry/disappointed people. Allow those same angry/disappointed people a few days to relax and re-evaluate their priorities/morals/underwear before their concerns are addressed (if at all) on the next business day. Allow any negative press to hopefully slip by mostly unnoticed as people are out, hopefully, having a good time on the weekends. Obviously the possibility of 22cans employing any of these tactics is all speculation on my part, but it is tried and true business practice for many public companies.

Yeah, they always release updates on Fridays, as far as I can recall. For the record, I'm not disappointed or angry or anything - I've long thought the game as-is is pretty terrible, so not having anything sway that towards the positive with this update isn't really stressful or upsetting.
I'm referring to the oft-quoted, never-elaborated-upon 'reasons' George referenced quite a bit over the past few months, which he promised he could finally elaborate and clarify once the update was released. Now that it's release, just curious as to what they are, even with his prefacing that whatever they were, we'd most likely not like them.

Question for Raspofabs. Why don't you like object oriented design? .. because it's a religious movement backed by unblinking sheep who never criticise their education or their leaders... I might be slightly biased. Also, I've watched it be the cause of games becoming "hard to modify" during development for over a decade. I also run this : www.dataorienteddesign.com
OOP definitely requires proper design and thought before writing code. If you have the foundations right though modification should be easy. I guess the different is in finance we don't start off writing a binominal model then half way through think lets write a auto hedger for our delta and charm instead.

Now this is my current favorite topic thread. I almost want to leave work early just so I can dig in and participate. :/ What happened to participating in the thread?

By the time I had a chance to get online, everyone else was off. So I put a few hours into trying the new update... and don't know if I want to continue.

Mine quit just fine the first time, although for some reason my computer reported that it crashed the second time even though it seemed to close properly. *shrug*

I've had the game "running" for about 6 hrs today, while actually playing (maybe, probably) about 4hours of that - the remaining time was waiting on timers. Still not really enjoying it - especially the Voyages which I've stated my opinion of before - though I can't say I hate it. I'm mostly just underwhelmed and disappointed that I funded this lame of a god game.
I'd really like to know what the "reasons" were that they had to delay this, though I'm sure we all know why.

Hah, yeah. That's pretty much the main reason OO has so much inertia. If your model is a set of schema, it's a lot easier to do a complete redesign. If your methods are attached to your data, you end up binding the data to other data, and it becomes a tangled mess very quickly. Apart from that, objects also make code slower because this data binding also means unrelated data gets put together, and that wastes memory bandwidth.

I might be slightly biased. Also, I've watched it be the cause of games becoming "hard to modify" during development for over a decade. I also run this : www.dataorienteddesign.comCould you perhaps go a little deeper into why it makes games hard to modify? Aren't there design patterns that are supposed to do exactly the opposite of that? Design Patterns are just the pits. They teach junior programmers how to stop thinking for themselves, and give them the buzzwords to get a job. Really don't want to get me started on this subject... Especially if you can't offer me some alcohol to soften the tone... Databases are the easiest thing to modify when it comes to data structures and schema manipulation, so Data Oriented Design takes cues from relational databases and supercomputing techniques. Most of the issues I've seen in games when it comes to inertia in code design, have come from bad coupling, whether logical, or physical. And almost all the cases have been because of inherent qualities of objects, such as only being able to define one aspect for data, or not being able to data hide without performance problems, or running into circular dependencies.

Question for feanix. What is the thing you created for Godus that you are most proud of? Ooh. Well, it's hard to choose. I love how the water and the storm VFX ended up. Long term I think those would be my favourites. In the short term I'm very happy with the Pit of Doom VFX. I love sacrificing followers! So satisfying. Ahhhh.

It's mostly just about finding the time and a supporting coder to get those looking a bit better.
