[own personal opinion disclaimer]. I'm not sure I can be bothered with this. I think it will only lead to games being designed specifically for it, so you'll most likely end up with two very different experiences and lose some of the ones that are designed with a kb/mouse interface specifically. Hopefully we don't end up in a situation where devs will feel as though they should support a proper controller interface on PC to get some featuring on Steam to help shift hardware units.
That said, its a good tick in the box for moving console games to steam.

Proper for PC is mouse/keyboard.
Wait, it's keyboard(+mouse). Should remember the actual order.

I like: Cats; single malt Scotch; Stargate; Amiga; fried potatoes; retro gaming; cheese; snickers; sticky tape.
I don't like: Dimples in the bottom of scotch bottles; Facebook games masquerading as godgames.

No, I talk about computer's basic internal structure. Pay no mind.

I must say this steam controller device looks far too complicated for the likes of me.

That said, its a good tick in the box for moving console games to steam. There are a few games that my husband and I play at the moment where our DS4/XB360 controllers feel more natural on the PC (e.g. Planetside 2 flight after the recent changes. He plays Elite:Dangerous with a HOTAS, I prefer a DS4+ KB/M. We both play Borderlands on the PC with XB360 controllers as it feels more.. arcadish to us and that precision you get with the kb/m is a tad unnecessary) I think that this new kit will certainly be fun to fiddle with, but I hope it will be more of a fringe niche, akin to gamepads (Nostromos, etc.) rather than a bandwagon item that will produce some tech demo level shovelware (e.g. PS motion controllers, etc)

I 100% prefer a controller to mouse/keyboard. Yes, even for FPSes.
... and OH THANK GOD THEY ADDED AN ANALOG STICK. I've tried two iterations of the Steam controller. And honestly, it just didn't feel right. The earlier ones did not have an analog stick; it was just 2 trackpads. Which felt nowhere near as comfortable nor as precise as an analog stick. And the button placement felt weird, because the idea was clearly that the 2 trackpads were the primary controls. That still looks like it's the case, sadly.
I'm probably going to stick to my PS4 controller. That feels lovely to hold. But this might be tempting for couch games w/games that don't support it.
Also, mouse+keyboard is rubbish for local multiplayer games.
