Been binging through all the interviews and forum posts I could find tonight and I'm really confused about where things are right now- the official site hasnt been updated for like a month and peter molyneux sounds sad. The new CEO seems like a good idea because peter molyneux should not run a studio. Will Bryan ever get any money? ? I hope you guys get the game you want, populous was awesome.

Peter is very sad but supposedly getting better. They are working on the Trail which is a new game of which we know absolutely nothing. And they're working on combat for godus.

I think they have two priorities right now:
- Most of the team will be focused on the Trail, which they'll want to release this year. They've succeeded in keeping very quiet about it but they are now starting to make a little more noise (e.g. Simon, the CEO, tweeting about how awesome the demo is). - Trying to put together the 2014 financial statements, which have still not been filed. Plenty of time yet, though... they have until the end of September. Did you know that failure to file financial statements on time is a criminal offense, for which the company directors are personally liable?

"Working on combat" is pretty much all we know of what they're doing on the Godus side of development.
Anything else we could suppose at this point would be speculative - no matter how our conclusion is derived. And frankly, we've been down that road so often that it's hard to muster up any motivation to continue doing so; speculating/guessing on what's happening at 22Cans is an effort of fruitless demoralizing frustration.
I would recommend avoiding that path of thought.

Team Godus are working on Combat. At the moment there's a pesky memory issue that is requiring nearly all of Richard's attention - it's pretty hefty and time consuming. We'll be sharing more combaty news in the coming weeks! And today we also had a successful studio playthrough of The Trail. Everything is moving along nicely!

Yeah, but I feel like the Trail robbed us of our true PC game, so I have no love for it, nor will I ever most likely. I am shocked 22cans would think any backers would....even more so if any do.

Personally, I'd guess that if Godus had always remained the only game 22Cans was working on until the present, it would have potentially broken the team entirely. Sometimes you need to take a step back from something that is difficult, and to allow a team to work on something that motivates them more strongly, just to keep things together. I feel that this applies doubly so to Peter, since I wager he feels very responsible for everything that has happened. If it indeed had broken the team entirely, Godus would be nigh impossible to save.

So diverting resources away from a project when its in trouble is a good idea? just because it will make some of the developers feel better. interesting opinion, i don't share it.
People paid for and want Godus, no one asked for or paid for the trail.
If it was stated in the kickstarter campaign, that Godus would be developed for about two years, delivering upon nearly none of its stated goals, and then the majority of the team would be reassigned to another game entirely, just how many pledges do you honestly think they would have received?

TBH, I backed for a game a business promised and they fraked it up and lied about....blah, blah, blah....*kicking carcass of rotted horse*....but moving on....blah, blah....but.... NO Frakin way does it make it okay for them to not finish our promised backed game and not refund our backed money for said game and divert to some other game......NOT IN ANY WAY. Look, they refund our cash, or close their doors and go admit they failed in making a game we waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over backed what they said they needed and THEN they can make other games. Any games, cow clicker or Final Fantasy or the best next game in the world, does not matter, but no other game is okay in my book till they fix the mess that will forever be their foundation. If they want a rotten foundation, then their company is doomed to fail. It is just a matter of time. Sorry, Simon, you seem nice enough but you took this on, so now you own it. Fix it, and until then your "Trail" is a spit in the backer's face.

Yes. ... sometimes you need a break. Now, what they did with Godus / The Trail? I don't think that's a good idea, by any stretch. But letting small teams (say, switch the size of Godus & The Trail) spend maybe a month working on something else – be it The Trail, or some other prototype that they can feel passionate about. You could even rotate the teams, so eventually everybody gets a good chunk of time working on something else. That would be a good idea. It'd keep people from getting burned out. Hell, even letting the entire company spend a month working on something else, and then returning to Godus with the full team might've revitalized the team & been a good idea long-term.

Burned out? Most are not the same people, so I don't see that as acceptable in any way. Th problem is, I don't believe they have still yet to say they would ever strip all the F2P mechanics from any PC version. Not even close, just vague mention of for now they are working on combat and not to ever expect what they originally promised by Konrad. Who is still a DEV on there. Also TBH. I have heard from a few birdies, it will never happen. Never, not close to what you think they will. I don't care to an extent, kissed that 100 pounds away a awhile ago, but it still ticks me off to hear any rationalizations about the Trail. I would have more respect if they just admitted they screwed us and now they no longer care and will just make more games with their ill gotten gains...money earned from the poison fruit and all that. Lessen learned, my bad, don't trust again. Greed makes the world spin.

If I signed up to work on the game in the Kickstarter campaign, you can be sure as hell, after the 2 years of development that's happened, I'd be burned out and need to take a break. ... I'd probably also be incredibly disillusioned, and probably leave (like others have). Taking a break from a long project and decimating the team to work on something new are completely different, though. I'm not defending the latter. That's gotta have the opposite effect – the people remaining on Godus have got to feel like they're being left stranded, and some of the people working on The Trail probably have a cloud of guilt hanging over them for leaving Godus in such a shitty state.

It's a job, they get paid to do it. I was burnt out on jobs from hard work, but I still did them. If I had failed as badly, I would have been fired. If I told my boss, I was tired of working on same project and needed a break, she would have shown me the door. On top of this, plenty of them are not from 2 plus years, many of them left in frustration from PM's constraints and deceptions. There is no excuse for 22cans moving on to another game and claiming to need more funds for PC Godus, that is what the money they were Kickstarted was for. If 22cans is on the Trail because they need a break, they should look for another job as most of their peers already did, and imo most likely are....and if you believe it (The Trail) is not for sheer greed then I have a very nice bridge you might like to buy. Also, those were your words and not theirs, I don't blame any DEVS at 22cans, I blame PM. He made a company and promised a product and never has produced it, now he is moving on with most of this company to another project he did not promise Brian any money for. If he was honorable in any way, he would have at least thrown the kid a bone. I worked for a car company years ago. It went under from bad business dealings. The owner felt so bad about us all losing our jobs in a day, no notice, that he paid us all a month's salary from his own pocket. That is what a somewhat honorable man is; even from a man who crushed his own company by double dealing a bank and having his business accounts frozen. Do you see anything coming from PM but lip service for last 2 plus years? Nope.

I only described that the team might have broken up if they hadn't started working on the Trial, I didn't say that made anything alright.

I didn't pledge and stopped following the game a while back, as I'd sort of stopped getting excited for a Molyneux game until I actually played it and had fun. Reading up on it in one big go with fresh eyes has got me kind of emotionally invested now.
I kind of hope eventually Peter can find a role where he doesn't have the freedom to bog down projects wit ridiculous high minded ideas and hamstring development, because the dude has cool ideas for games.
I don't doubt that the people working on Godus are working very hard but from everything I've read it really sounds like they are trying to squeeze features onto a not very flexible engine, constrained heavily by the mobile requirement. Reading blog posts by leaving staff members is illuminating, and paints a picture of a very dysfunctional office.
This Simon guy may be corporate slime, but he might be what the company needs.
Realistically though, 22cans has a lot of work to do to overcome the stigma attached to them which is a big shame, they feel like the victim of an internet hate-on, although most criticisms are accurate.

Well, that went downhill fast. Worst. Excuse. Ever. Even if it was just speculative exposition on potential outcomes given probable factors. Those tend to come back and bite you in the backside if you're not careful. Now, about this combat we've been hearing about... How's that going? It's been a few weeks since we've heard a solid update on it.
