Our kitties, aka furry Ba'al and Qetesh (also come to Baby Boy and Teshie) really need a tree for our house. This is going to save us hours of our lives back screaming "Stop scratching that! and Off the couch! " So, we finally have means to get them one. We have both been looking and first of all, Holy Shit are they expensive over here. Second, half the places I looked at won't deliver to Northern Ireland ( so fucked up in 2015!) and third, the pickins are really slim. Most look identical. Fourth, we need a tall one that also has a cubby. Our one cat is a tree climber and loves to perch and our other is a cave dweller and needs a place to chill in. Lastly, Ba'al is a big boy, he is not fat but he is sturdy and around 15 pounds or so. Teshie is tiny, and skinny, lucky if she is 7 pounds. I found this one but it is only a bit shorter than me and I will need to find a way to get a platform attached to it to make tall enough. On other hand we found other one, it is tall, but top seats are small and Ba'al would not fit well and he is the percher. Anyone know of any others that might ship here for less than a small fortune? Here are are choices, what do you all think is best one? I am leaning to shorter one with one big seat up top and smaller one below along with cubby and hammock. www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/scratching_posts/large/large_cat_trees_height_180_cm/84900www.amazon.co.uk/Scratching-Activity-Climbing-Furniture-Scratcher/dp/B00DI37RVQ/ref=sr_1_7?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1451047475&sr=1-7&keywords=cat+tree

Qetesh, you have come to the right place I have 4 cats and 2 cat trees in my house, and several piles of cat toys that I should probably throw away because the kittens have long lost interest. The second option you listed, by Leopet, is the exact cat tree I have in the corner of my living room and my cats love it. Especially when they were younger, we would frequently have one cat sleeping on each of the 'nesting boxes' at the top. They have a strong preference for the scratching posts at the bottom of the tree and these are so ruined from excessive scratching I'm going to have to replace it soon, but even with all the options on the market I plan to buy exactly the same one (though possibly in a finish that more closely fits with the decor of my house - another advantage is you can get it in loads of different finishes). The highest perch is definitely the favourite of all my cats. I guess they love height. We have had no problems with the stability of this cat tree. It comes on quite a wide wooden base. We have a smaller cat tree (classic bed-on-a-post model) which we have had to place right in a corner to stop it tipping over when they launch themselves at it. We have considered cat shelves as well, for some of the other rooms in our house, but my husband is beginning to insist we've got enough cat stuff.

By the way, even the biggest of my cats has no trouble squishing himself in to the perches on this cat tree. Cats don't seem phased by the prospect of cramming themselves in small spaces if it gives them a good vantage point.

I foresee a cat tree in my near future.

To be honest they both look like good options, my cats would enjoy both of them - their key criteria seems to be the height. However, they have consistently ignored any hammock-type bed we've provided them. So the hammock tree looks ok too but don't expect them to use the hammock!

However, they have consistently ignored any hammock-type bed we've provided them. So the hammock tree looks ok too but don't expect them to use the hammock! I was wondering about that. Our cats love to perch on top of high dressers and shelves, love to snuggle on a blanket with mom and dad, and love to spread out on the bed when nobody is around. I am curious how a hammock fits in with all that. But, then again, it would be a cool place to hold cat toys out of the way. I am still up in the air. My boy has half his body hanging off the shelf in the kitchen when he is up there and he looks quite uncomfortable. I would hate for him to have to do the same on his own cat tree. I wish I could figure out exact size of platforms for him. How big are yours? He is a sturdy big fluffy kitty.

The interior of the perches are a tight 25cm x 26cm, minus a cut-off corner. So it is definitely a snug fit! Like I said, our biggest cat (who is probably about the same size as your boy) is not bothered by this, but if you think it wouldn't work out you may want to go for the other model. When ours sleep on the perches they tend to have a couple of legs sticking out at the front.
Another option is to build your own, which is something we have also considered. They are basically chipboard sheets upholstered in cheap faux fur. The posts are just heavy-duty card/wood wrapped in rope. Our Leopet cat tree serves its purpose perfectly well and we're very happy with it, but it's not a high-quality piece of craftsmanship (hence the low price) which is what got us to thinking in future maybe we could try our hand at building one ourselves.

Attached is a picture of my cats demonstrating the various ways in which a cat can sleep on the Leopet cat tree perches. The biggest cat in on the perch on the left, showing the sleep-with-legs-out position. I don't know why the top cat has chosen to sleep with half his body hanging off the edge, that is not normal. Right at this moment two of my cats are neatly curled up on the perches with no overflow. The smaller cat tree we own is also in this picture, with my smallest cat sitting on it.

The also look awesome. I forgot to add that like you, we have some very exacting standards when it comes to cat trees - one being the height, and another being that it needs at least three perches with good vantage points to keep our multiple kitties happy. This severely limited our options. Since I mentioned it to my husband yesterday, he has asked me to design my own cat tree and he will attempt to build one (he's taken up a recent interest in woodwork) so that should be interesting.

Tell your husband I've looked into it at some point. You can get cilinder shaped wooden poles quite easily and cheaply. Those would make for a solid and sturdy construction that hopefully shouldn't tip over easily. The rope that is used to wrap around the poles however is a whole different matter. It is not cheap.

Depends on the rope you need. I'm sure I can get you organic (linen) rope around 5 milimeters thick for 5 dollars max per 2 metres in the nearby (walking distance) shop. Dunno what shipping would cost, tho.

The amount of twine you need to wrap around the poles is A LOT. Let's say you want to have a 50cm long pole with a diameter of let's 10cm. Now let's say you use 5mm diameter twine rope. You would need about 1000 * Pi centimeters in rope length to cover the pole. That's about 31.42 meters of rope to cover just one pole. Even figuring the cheapest price for twine rope when buying in bulk you'd be spending a whole lot more money than buying the poles ready made.

As would I. At least you can make sure you build something sturdy.

That's a nice option too! That one actually ticks a lot of boxes for my cats. They still wouldn't use the side hammocks, but I like the number of hides and perches. The perches have a 30cm diameter though. Without sides, I'm not sure my cats would sit comfortably on these. They have a tendency to roll over while they sleep and might end up on the floor!
