According to Mr Molyneux, The Trial will set right the aspects that went wrong with Godus, his latest project under the independent studio 22Cans. The Kickstarter-funded god simulation game ‘lacked in narrative, progress and reward.’Because it's not done yet.
"I don't think that works. Because I think what ends up happening, and what ended up happening with Godus, is that people get a view of what the game is going to be like from what you've said here, and that view is quite often different from what the final game is."That's because that's how you pitch something, you don't pitch something and then scrap it halfway through for something else and expect them to be okay with that. That's not how this works, Peter. You didn't pitch the game as this massive hubworld nonsense, you pitched it as a reinvention of god games, but with the major caveat that that reinvention would draw from Populous, Black & White, and Dungeon Keeper. You dug your own grave when you decided it had to become something else once you got the money. The acclaimed developer said that he regrets using the crowdsourcing platform at the beginning of the game's development as it resulted in the final product being different from what fans were expecting. When you can't commit to your own ideas and prematurely release the game to Steam, yeah, that tends to happen. That's not Kickstarter or Early Access' fault, that's the designer's fault, own up to it, finish your product as you pitched it, and stop bitching about your inability to "do proper game development." That's nothing short of an excuse at this point.

It's brilliant how these stories always break out from interviews and never from a carefully managed message from the cans (sorry if there was a carefully managed message). It maximises the reputational carnage and the joy I derive from peters foot in mouth disease.
Peter made a bed and he doesn't like it enough to sleep in it. He wants a do over and another bed to sleep in. I say good luck finding any funding for that bed because nobody around here will be "investing".
I have to say at this point I'm laughing and not bitter at all. For me him trying to get another project off the ground is a delight because it gives karma a chance to kick him in the ass.

This probably isn't what PM intended when he set out on the Godus venture, but 22Cans is running itself into the ground right now. Godus sold well at first but presently they'll only be shifting it during sales, and it's probably not doing that well even then because of the reviews. The mobile version is struggling to retain users and PM has freely admitted that 22Cans can't keep up with the content demand from mobile players.
PC version isn't making money and the mobile version doesn't have a strong enough vision of the eventual end-game to ever be completed, so that will lose its dwindling player base too. Android has probably been a good boost for 22Cans but they already know it's not sustainable because they'll hit the same wall they've hit with iOS. Remember when PM used to say that 22Cans was a one-product company and Godus was the be-all and end-all? I had assumed 22Cans would wind up following the failure of Godus, but that's what I get for believing anything that comes out of PM's mouth!
Ethical issues and personal feelings aside, ditching Godus and focusing on a new product is a sound business decision. I wonder what platform and financial model we can expect? Not that I'll buy it. But if it's another freemium mobile game, the reputation of Godus will not hurt its chances in the slightest.

That's nothing short of an excuse at this point. The Molyneux Mobius Strip: Announces Game -> Hypes Game -> Half-Asses Game (compared directly to his own hype) -> Announces New Game While Simultaneously Attempting to Hype that Game by Bashing the Previous Game -> Return to Step 3. Around and around we go on the Molyneux Strip of tragic irony. Him blaming his own failures on "The Tech not Existing" or "Volatile Communities" or "Social Networks Being too Social" are bordering on the imbecilic at this point. Shame on you Peter, you should know better. I'm betting this new game "epiphany" boils down to this: Godus wasn't the cash cow he had hoped it would be, and even if 22cans is able to dredge it out of it's current state to a glowing PC game, the damage is already done. Godus will never be solvent. Time to move on. After all, it's the designers job to think about the money, is it not?

What ended up happening... Final product?
Have we entered a time bubble? That all 'reads' as if its after Godus is completed, and its our fault.. just for a change.
My copy says 53%...

So basicly Peter Molyneux wants to be paid to make a game - make this game on his own pace and agenda no matter how long it takes and no matter how often he'll change his mind on the direction, goal or objectives. And just keep getting paid while he wanders around chasing butterflies.
Please tell me - who is going to pay for this game?

Godus will never be solvent. Time to move on. After all, it's the designers job to think about the money, is it not? Dunno about the designers, but it's certainly the financial controller's job to think about the money... Peter Murphy works in finance at 22Cans (inconveniently, another 'PM'), and according to early interviews with Molyneux, Murphy was brought in to take care of all of the boring business side of things that Molyneux has no interest in. Murphy is also the second biggest shareholder at 22Cans after Molyneux, and given his previous industry experience, it's likely he's on a pretty decent remuneration package including further share options. In fact, 22Cans employs a lot of talented people whose remuneration package has probably been bumped up with share options (this is not pure speculation by the way, it's based on the notes to 22Cans 2013 financial statements). So long-term, 22Cans must either list on a public exchange or sell up. Otherwise it's screwing over all its employees. Godus is not the golden ticket everyone hoped for, so a new strategy is needed - and this IS pure speculation, but take note 22Cans because this is how you get your share scheme to work: Ditch the long-haul projects and start churning out loads of quick-win freemium games with in-game transactions. Instantly 22Cans is a hugely saleable company. Kerching. You're welcome.

Believe me, this was news to me too. I don't worry george I believed that even before you said it. I don't really bear 22cans/peter any serious I'll will over this atm. For me it feels cathartic. For others might be more upsetting and understandably so.

Be patient, be patient, be patient, we're done, I'm moving on to something else. It's like Moses taking his people into the desert and abandoning them there. You know how I said I'd take you to the promised land? Turns out its to hard so I'm going to find another bunch of oppressed people and take them to their promised land. If I was Jack, George, Fabs, etc Id be worried id be left in the desert with the other riff raff.

Believe me, this was news to me too. Well, I think we all know it isn't your fault. The only thing you ever done wrong is getting hired by 22Cans, which I already wrote about. And you're doing your work admirably and if you had ability to convey feedback efficiently (without problems at, er, receiving side), you maybe even could save the situation. But the guys above you made it so that nothing will save the situation less than an orbital bombardment and I'm out of space stations. So yeah, your job is something we don't like since it makes to dance on our memorial service, but at least I like you.

I think we all understand that this is probably more distressing for 22cans staff than for us. Nobody in this community believed in peter anymore but it's possible some people at 22cans still did.
